New Teen Mentorship Program
Would your child enjoy having a "practice buddy"?

A number of our teen students have just attended the Senior Mentoring course given by Elayne Ras of the Guelph Suzuki String School, this past weekend here in Ottawa.  The students who participated in this 5-hour workshop will now complete the course by observing six Book 1 lessons within the next four weeks, as well as complete their required reading of Dr. Suzuki's book "Nurtured by Love".

Upon completion of the course, they will then receive certification as "Suzuki Teen Mentors".

Ask your studio teacher about the possibility of engaging one of them as a "practice buddy" for your child.  Scheduling, availability and more information will be posted on our website soon.

Outreach News & Events

Our students in the community, by Chela Iznardo

Some of our students participated in some great performance opportunities at the following events during the past months:

Thank you to The Peruvian Association of Ottawa-Gatineau for adding our Senior Guitar Ensemble to their program for Les Couleurs du Prou at the Galerie Montcalm, Sunday November 28th.  Many thanks to Daniel Srugo for all of his work with this group and their expanding repertoire.

The Shenkman Arts Centre Christmas Event, on December 5th, featured some of our students performing in the lobby between shows.  Thank you to Judy Olmstead-O'Regan for referring our students for this event.
Here's what Mike Taylor, of the Shenkman Arts Centre, had to say about our students, Alejandro, Kasia & Daniel, Rabib & Miranda:

"It was a great pleasure to have your students playing at the centre during this past weekend's event. They helped create a great atmosphere in the building." "Some people mentioned they were happy to see youth being involved in the event. Someone else was impressed with the level of accomplishment of the musicians.  Thanks again."

And thanks, as always to all the faculty coaches who assist and encourage our students during these outreach events.  For more information, please contact Chela Iznardo.

News from our Board of Directors
by Rolly Aubrey, president of the Board

Dear SuzukiMusic Community,

The board of directors would like to keep you informed of the activities which are under way at the moment. We spent a busy Fall analyzing the Telfer Marketing Report in order to adopt a plan going forward. If you recall, the Telfer School analyzed the school with the purpose of reducing yearly turn-over of students and to promote growth. The report suggested two possible plans. One plan was a low cost, low effort plan that would help us for the near future to get attain our goals, but it did not set us on track for long term success. The second plan they outlined for us was a three year plan which was a  slightly higher investment and more initial work, but it had a long term success path built in.

Based on the data and a positive attitude, the board has elected to go with the three year plan that may cost a bit more up front but will greatly improve the probability of success in the Ottawa area. There are 5 key programs that the plan calls for. These programs require a number of committees to make them successful. We are putting together the following committees: Marketing, Communication, Fund-raising, Finance, HR and IT. These committees will work together to reach the goals of each of the programs. There is a rough schedule of deliverables and milestones already in the plan, but we are working to refine it. What we could really use is some help from our families that have professional experience in these categories. We hope that you feel as strongly as we do about our Suzuki community and really pitch in to make it work even better in the future. Please contact me at [email protected] to ask any questions or offer help with any of the programs I've mentioned.

We have many exciting opportunities coming up for your musicians to take part in and learn from. Much of that is due to the tireless efforts of our Management team of Liko and Chantal as well as the energetic and creative Artistic Direction of Beth Sturdevant and Assistant Artistic Director Kenda Stathopoulos. Chela Iznardo has contributed greatly as well with the outreach program, giving the kids great opportunities to get into the community and utilize their musical talents! I have also never yet witnessed a stronger faculty team that seems to be more positive and excited than ever. It sure makes being on the board a very positive experience.

Thanks for your time!

Rolly Aubrey
