Dear CORR{ageous}! Leaders,

Indeed this is a season of change!  Outside, brittle twigs fall away to reveal tender buds. Dry grasses of winter are turning green.  We see the evidence of renewed life, but are we really aware of the struggle, the stress required to make such small miracles happen?

The stories in this edition of CORR{ageous}! Times remind us that the journey towards renewed life is stress-filled, often a quiet struggle without fanfare, and without the opportunity to see results until much work has been done.

The challenge of creating diversity in the ranks of our United Methodist delegations heading to General Conference is underway. Read about it in the story on the Call to CORR[age}! Campaign. Make your plans to take part in the webinar.

You'll also read about one mother's pain to insure her children enjoy new life. For a denomination that has as its legacy providing education to those at the margins, what does such a story require of us? Where are the places where stress needs to be applied?

As we consider the places in our own lives where stress lives, may we also remember that in each place God is already at work quietly, without fanfare, providing for us a place to step into opportunity as we journey towards the resurrection.

Be Strong and CORR{ageous}!

Erin M. Hawkins

General Secretary
General Commission on Religion and Race

Now's the Time to Make a Difference at General Conference 2012

Call to CORR{age}!As United Methodists gear up for this annual conference season, one of the key challenges before us will be to pass legislation and elect delegates to the denomination's General Conference to be held in 2012. Facing an overall decrease in the total number of U.S. delegates to the 2012 General Conference, what will be the faces seen and issues raised during this pivotal time for change in the denomination?

Committee Addresses Church Vitality and Changing Demographics

Facing a decline in membership in the United States, many United Methodists are finding that the church isn't exactly where they'd like it to be. Call to Action, a 12-member committee, was formed to address how church vitality can be increased. Their live webcast Leadership Summit is one avenue for an international conversation with key leaders in the United Methodist connection to voice their thoughts. During the Summit, GCORR General Secretary Erin Hawkins shared her views on how churches must meet the changing demographics of the country. See the full clip and read more.

Population Boom

U.S. Youth Population Grows More Diverse, Experiences More Poverty

2010 Census figures recently released show that the U.S. child population grew far more diverse in the past decade, with the number of racial/ethnic children doubling in at least 10 states. This shift in the youth population's racial makeup has already made changes in the nation's school systems, where according to reports coming out of the Census, "the black and white divide of the past has become a more complex mix of race, language and religion." In light of these recent findings, the General Commission on Religion and Race is interested in bringing equity in education into the United Methodist conversation. Read More

One Woman's Battle Draws Attention to Ohio's Flawed Education System

Kelly williams bolarWhen Kelly Williams-Bolar enrolled her two daughters in a school outside her district, she never thought her livelihood or freedom would be jeopardized. In an attempt to expose her children to an educational environment without high crime and low school performance, the Akron, Ohio single mother spent nine days in jail for falsifying documents. The original sentence was five years for charges of grand theft after Williams-Bolar refused to pay past tuition fees at the predominantly white elementary school. Read More
