Greetings!

The Center for Practice Innovation's (CPI) primary goals are to promote the widespread availability of mental health evidence-based practices in New York State, promote innovations related to emerging promising practices, cultural adaptations and organizational change approaches and to create informational and educational resources for the general public as well as users and providers of mental health services.

Treatment for Nicotine Addiction: You Can Help!

Take the FIT Modules on Treating Tobacco Dependence

Did you know that almost half of the cigarettes smoked in the United States are consumed by people with mental illness and substance use disorders?

The Office of Mental Health (OMH) in New York has identified tobacco cessation treatment as a major strategy that can improve health and reduce the chronic medical illnesses and early deaths that are prevalent among people who live with serious mental illness.

The Center for Practice Innovations, in partnership with OMH and the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, is pleased to announce the release of three new Focus on Integrated Treatment (FIT) online training modules aimed at treating tobacco dependence:

  • FIT Module 36: Practitioner Tools for Treating Tobacco Dependence 2012 RFMH
  • FIT Module 37: Understanding the Use of Medications to Treat Tobacco Dependence 2012 RFMH (0.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)TM).
  • FIT Module 38: Implementing Tobacco Dependence Treatment 2012 RFMH

These revealing and enlightening modules feature video clips of consumers and practitioners as they discuss tobacco dependence and cessation solutions, interactive exercises, and links to helpful resources including other relevant FIT modules.  They provide mental health professionals, psychiatrists, and psychiatric prescribers with up-to-date, evidence-based information and clinical skills that will provide hope and help to those who want to reduce and quit their use of tobacco in order to improve their health and enhance their recovery.
