| End of Triennium | |
As we approach the end of triennium 2009-2012, it is time for maintenance (housekeeping), reflection, evaluation and continuing on to another phase in our Christian walk. A good feature of the Order is that every three years we naturally make a change in the National Council composition. We come to Triennial and become refreshed and renewed. Hopefully officers at the different levels are changing so that new ideas and inspirations can be brought forth. All Chapters, Diocesan Assemblies and Provinces should be sending to the National office the change of Officers forms. It is especially important that the names of the treasurer of the Diocesan Assemblies and the Provinces are sent to the National office. Also the treasury books should be reviewed.
Membership dues payments should be sent to the National Office by September 1, 2012. For individuals who are experiencing financial issues, they should ask their chapter to help and if they cannot, then ask sequentially their Priest or Diocesan assembly or Province Assembly. As a last resort the National office should be asked. The intent is for the National office to provide out of the membership scholarship fund only when one of the other levels cannot provide the needed help.
As new officers are taking office and others are serving another term, information should be passed on to the incoming officers. If possible a planning meeting should occur with the outgoing officers and the incoming officers. This can be a time for strategic planning and thinking out of the box. Things that have worked well should be continued and things that have not been successful should be eliminated or changed. Eventually a plan should be made for the new triennium and phrases such as "we always did it this way" should be evaluated. All levels may wish to review their bylaws or formulate bylaws if they do not have any. This is a time to plan quiet days or retreats or studies for the triennium. If you have Junior Daughters, plans as to how the Senior Daughters will support the Junior Daughters should be put into place. Meeting times should be reviewed. Each individual chapter will have to work and plan according to their restrictions and capabilities.
As Daughters we should be seeking what the Lord is calling for us to do as a member of a Chapter, Diocesan Assembly and Province. Pray the motto, contemplate and evaluate what you are to do by seeking the guidance from the Holy Spirit. I close with some of my favorite verses.
"12 Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. 13 Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus." Philippians 3:12-14 NIV
Let us all continue on as Paul says in Philippians 3: 12-14 by praying, serving and evangelizing.

| IF YOU LOVE ME KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS JOHN 14: 15-24 | Reading chapter 14 in the 4th gospel reveals to us that to John there is only one test of love and that is obedience. It was by his obedience that Jesus showed his love of God; and it is by our obedience that we must show our love of Jesus. John never allowed love to devolve into a sentiment of emotion. Its expression is always moral and is revealed in obedience.
So many express their love in words but at the same time bring pain and heartbreak to those whom they claim to love. There are children and young people who say that they love their parents, and yet cause them grief and anxiety. Then there are husbands who say they love their wives and wives who say they love their husbands and yet, by their inconsiderateness and their irritability and their thoughtless unkindness, bring pain the one to the other. To Jesus real love is not an easy thing. It is shown only in true obedience.
Because it is not an easy thing, Jesus sends us a Helper; in Greek this word is parakletos. The Greeks used the word in court when a person was called in to give witness; he might be an advocate called in to plead the cause of someone under a charge which would issue in serious penalty. He might be an expert called in to give advice in some difficult situation; he might be a person called in when for example, a company of soldiers were depressed and dispirited to put new courage into their minds and hearts. Another way to interpret this word is to be able to cope with things. This is the work of the Holy Spirit. He takes away our inadequacies and enables us to cope with life. Just try to put in our minds what Jesus is telling us: "I am giving you a hard task, and I am sending you out on a very difficult engagement. But I am going to send you someone, the Helper, who will guide you as to what to do and enable you to do it."
How comforting for us to know that we have the Helper to guide and help us with our task. As we take ownership of the next Triennial, we do it for his sake and we know that each of us is called in to a specific task to make this Triennial a time to learn, a time to love one another and a time to experience the Helper within us.
How do we recognize the Holy Spirit? An astronomer will see far more in the sky than an ordinary man. Someone who knows art will see far more in a picture than someone who is quite ignorant of art. If a person does not believe in God, that person will never listen for him. We need to wait in expectation and in prayer for him to come to us. We must take the time amidst our busy life to wait in silence for his coming. For John love is the basis of everything. God loves Jesus; Jesus loves God; God loves humanity; Jesus loves men and women; men and women love God through Jesus; men and women love each other; heaven and earth, man/woman and God, we are all bound together by the bond of love. Because we love we obey and that obedience leads us to safety in a crashing world. It also leads us to a fuller revelation of God.
God reveals himself to those who are looking for him. When all fails, we reach up to him and he reaches down to us. It is then that we become aware of a personal relationship with God and we begin to understand the world, others, as well as ourselves with the mind of God. It is then that we become dependent on His love. Our real journey begins as we walk the way Christ showed us and also as we walk with him.

| Laurie Ann Herman, DOK National President 1994-1997, died April 4, 2012 | |
I first met Laurie Ann in Indianapolis at Triennial when she became National President in 1994. It was my first Triennial. I had only been a Daughter three years and Laurie Ann had been a Daughter for 26 years at that time. At the end of that Triennial, the Lord gave me the words "The Balm of Gilead," a healing prayer ministry I had been involved with at the Texas Medical Center. Laurie Ann was a great encourager for me. Frequently she would call and pray with me. Three years later at Triennial in Philadelphia she invited me to be on a prayer team for support during that meeting. Over the pursuing years she would call and we would catch up and we always prayed. Laurie Ann's deep faith and gentle spirit touched me greatly even when she was experiencing serious illness, several years ago.
Much has been written about Laurie Ann: Her professional career at a very young age as a water skier, a journalist writing for newspapers, radio and TV, and an artist using her great artistic talent in water and oil painting. Her many involvements in Evangelism in the Episcopal Church included, Faith Alive, Cursillo, Pews Action, Council of Women's Ministries, presenter to the first Senior and Junior Daughters Chapters in Honduras, her involvement in the first Cuban chapter, and the rapid expansion of International Daughters. Her devotion to her family came second only to her love and service to the Lord. She served in many capacities in her church, Church of the Nativity in Port St. Lucie, Florida.
My husband and I visited Laurie Ann and her beloved husband Ron, several years ago. When I became National President in 2006, Laurie Ann was again an encourager and faithful prayer warrior for me. She loved the Order, and her face radiated with the JOY of the LORD. Her favorite bible passage was Psalm 23.
Her message to future Daughters: "Officers and members of the National Council seek to represent the work and spirit of the Order in all that they do. Each and every member of the Order does the same. By daily wearing your cross, you are proclaiming the Kingship of our Lord Jesus Christ. You are seeking His will in being servants For His Sake. May God bless you in your service for the spread of Christ's kingdom and daily ask, Lord what will you have me do?" As we gather at this Triennial in Indianapolis, the site where she became our National President, eighteen years ago, it is fitting that we will remember Laurie Ann, and give thanks to God for her life of service, her friendship, her caring heart, and her example of what it means to truly be a Daughter of the King.

| Note from National Secretary | |
What a privilege it has been to serve as your National Secretary this last Triennium. As Secretary I maintained the minutes of National Council Meetings (23 people) as well as the minutes of the Executive Board meetings (7-8 people). As with any organization, communication is key to a productive and successful time together. When you gather 25 people together to discuss many matters there is a lot to be said and yet, I had to discern what were the "nuggets" that were necessary for inclusion in the recordkeeping. The gift of Encouragement (one of my spiritual gifts) allowed me to assist President Grace Sears in getting people back on track in conversation as well as to have fun with getting people back together after a break.
The Celebration Chapter helped our Order come into the 21st Century with technical communication. The National Office can receive dues payments online and save quite a bit in postage because they send out fewer second dues notices. We used Cross+Links to get the word out to the Daughters about upcoming events or deadlines. The format of the Royal Cross magazine was changed to a smaller size and also saved money in postage costs. The use of e-mail and Facebook by Daughters -at- Large certainly was a positive way to communicate and give those women a sense of connection. Several times each year the Executive Board would use a Conference Call (initiated by President Grace) for discussion and vote on an item. As Secretary I made sure the notes taken for these calls were included in the official file.
So whether you are serving The Order of the Daughters of the King at the chapter level, Diocesan level, Province level, or National level, do it all to the glory of God and For His sake. If you are hesitating about some step in your Christian walk, speak about it with one or two Daughters and then take a leap of faith and say YES to something you never thought you could do. Jesus said "if you do it to the least of these, you have done it unto me". Whenever you say YES to serving For His sake, you will be given the grace to do the task.
