Meeting Attendance

       A Question Frequently  Asked

Frequently I receive mail or an email asking me about how to get Daughters to attend meetings.  Some have indicated that once some women go through the study they fail to come to meetings and maintain being in community with the Daughters in the chapter.  This has been distressing to say the least and Presidents of chapters have solicited my help.   I have tried to take a role of being compassionate to the writer or caller, as I can feel the frustration in the tone of the letter or call.  I have no definite answer.  Some have said that these ladies often pay their dues but do not see the need to come to meetings.

We have no definite structure in the Order to deal with this matter.  When a Daughter takes her vows and joins the Order, it is our hope that everyone is making a lifetime commitment and will follow what she has vowed to do.  In the handbook, it states under "To help accomplish this a Daughter: .....attends and participates in regular chapter meetings, Diocesan and Provincial Assemblies."  Certainly one understands that situations in life cause one not to come to meetings.  These situations can be death in the family, personal or family illness and I could go on and on about the excuses or reasons.  It seems that when one gets in the habit of not attending meetings, she feels comfortable doing this and it becomes harder and harder to get focused on attending a meeting.

In an attempt to resolve this issue, I propose that the Daughter should be personally contacted by the President or someone who is acting on her behalf.  The Priest may be involved to help also.  Ladies should be reminded that they took vows to pray, to serve, to evangelize for Christ's kingdom.  It should be explored with the individual as to whether she is still called to be in this ministry and encouraged to pray as to what the Lord is calling her to do.  If a person is not paying her dues because of financial reasons, that could be resolved if this is the reason for not attending meetings.  Finally as President of a chapter, effort should be made to be in contact with members via email, letters, notes, cards in order to keep communication going with chapter members.  Hopefully we can as an Order improve attendance at meetings and encourage members to understand that we are in community and attending meetings fosters this For His Sake.

FROG

FROG - Fully Rely On GodIt hardly seems like winter has happened in the northeast of the US - cool temperatures but little snow .  The spring flowers have already started to bloom.  Other parts of the US have had plenty of snow, winds, and tornados.  Europe has seen some of the coldest weather in many years.

On the calendar we are getting closer to spring and warmer weather.  The flowers will bloom.  Leaves on the trees will appear.  The bugs will pester us.  And the frog will be a delight to small children.  Frog -  made by God, colorful to blend in with the garden plants, ugly but a beautiful creature, useful to eat insects, but also a creature to remind us - Fully Relying On God.

Little snow may lead to little water for the summer months.  Warm temperatures may lead to more pesky insects.  Winds and tornados leave people, homes, and businesses destroyed.  We need to offer up our prayers for all happenings and like FROG, fully rely on God to guide and protect us.  And while you are involved in prayer remember to do it unceasingly.

We are FULLY RELYING ON GOD to help us prepare for our DOK Triennial.  The National Council,  Grace, Lana and committee chairs are working diligently to make the Triennial a glorious celebration for the 125th anniversary of the Order.  We pray that you are making plans to attend and encouraging other Daughters to join us.  If you cannot attend, pray for delegates, attendees, clergy and guests who will celebrate with us.  Pray that International Daughters will obtain visas to come to the United States.  Pray for General Convention that follows our Triennial.  Indianapolis will be a busy place at the beginning of summer but as we are FROG, God will be in our midst.

Praying HandsPrayer Request from the Jerusalem Chapter

Christ Church Jerusalem is holding a conference for believers from all over the Middle East to come to Jerusalem in the second week of May 2012.  We are hoping that Christians actively involved in ministry from Morocco to Iran will be able to come together at Christ Church in Jerusalem for prayer, mutual encouragement and to seek God regarding His purposes for the children of Isaac and Ishmael at this time of turmoil and upheaval in the Middle East.  What God is doing is so much bigger than many of us realize.  More often than not we can become so focused on Israel and the Arab-Israel conflict that the bigger picture of God's expanding Kingship in our region can be overlooked.

Vision statement for the Christ Church At the Crossroads conference:

In the context of worship and prayer, a unique summit will convene in Jerusalem for those serving the Lord throughout the Middle East to facilitate a Kingdom perspective; to learn from and encourage one another with a view of creating strategic partnerships to enable us to face the challenges of our changing region.

We are asking DOK for prayer for:

No Fear.  While many believers are interested in coming there is a great deal of reluctance on the part of some due to the increased pressure/scrutiny by their governments in countries such as Iran, Egypt and Turkey.  Pray that those called to attend will be bold and will be protected.  It is important that Turkish, Kurdish, Iranian, Arab, and Israeli followers of Jesus (not just Internationals) are well represented at this event.

Finances.  While the cost of the conference is minimal we need to help believers pay for local accommodation and travel expenses. After the conference there will also be a short Shoresh tour to enable our participants to learn more about the life of Jesus of Nazareth in his Jewish/Hebrew context.

Visas.  Very little needs to be said as it is well known that visas are always difficult with local bureaucracy (not to mention security concerns).  In principle Israel accepts visitors from every country in the world except a handful (i.e. Somalia, Pakistan, etc.).  In practice it is often another story.

We are grateful for all those who continue to pray for the ministry of Christ Church Jerusalem.  Please continue to intercede for us and for the opportunities we have to be a witness to the Risen Lord Jesus here in the Middle East.

Shalom,

David Pileggi, Rector

Servant Leadership

In the Daughters of the King we are servant leaders.  That means we stand for office because God has called us to stand and we are willing to serve this Order and our Sisters in Christ for the advancement of Christ's kingdom.  It does not mean we get elected each time we stand; it does not mean we are the best equipped persons for the job; it does not mean we have mastered the job or accomplished all we think we should; it does mean we are willing to surrender our will and our lives to God's call. God equips those He calls to do the work He wants done. God's plan may not be our plan. He sees a much more encompassing plan than achieving great success in a job or accomplishing a certain goal. He sees the fulfillment of His purpose, which is not always clear to us.

One of the most beautiful examples of servant leadership I ever experienced in this Order was when a past National President, during a meeting of the National Council, went to the room of a sick sister, got down on her knees, and washed and massaged this sister's feet. That National President was the late Joan Millard. A woman who truly understood the meaning of being a servant leader. A soft spoken southern lady with a heart for prayer and service and a willingness to follow our Lord wherever He called her. A woman, who would have preferred to serve her time on the National Council as the Self Denial Chairman, but was willing to stand for President, in spite of her own fears and doubts, and in standing, changed the course of this Order.

I have a question: How many of you owe a debt to the Order because you have been sustained through a tough time by the prayers and support of your sisters in the Daughters of the King? I know I do! In fact, I am not sure I would even be standing here if my sisters in the Order of the Daughters of the King had not prayed and supported me out of my abusive first marriage. I had a dear friend and sister in the Order who was murdered by her abusive husband. As I sat at her funeral so many years ago, I knew that only by the grace of God, it was her and not me, being buried that day. I asked God why. The only answer I got was that I needed to serve this Order twice as much - once for my life and once for my dear friend, whose life was cut short. And I have tried to faithfully live out that call. And as many of you know, my time of service has not always been easy. So I ask, have you given your all back to this Order? Without sisters stepping forward and taking a risk to be servant leaders, God's work cannot be done.

Let us pray.

Heavenly Father, the Order of the Daughters of the King belongs to you. Each member belongs to you. Each of us has taken a vow to work for the purposes of the Order, as you may give us opportunity. Guide us now and make our hearts open to your call and give us the strength and wisdom to serve you and fulfill your purpose for our lives. For His Sake....Amen.
