DOK Membership Pie Chart

When you opened the Royal Cross this month, you may have flipped over the pages listing new chapters from 2009-2010. Those pages have no photos and a lot of small type, so they are easy to pass over. Yet that list of new chapters says a lot to me. Each chapter name is a vote of confidence in The Order of the Daughters of the KingŪ, and a sign that God continues to trust the Order to lead women in prayer and service For His Sake.

In 2009 we knew we would lose some members. Some left to join the new Order of the Daughters of the Holy Cross. Some left for the newly incorporated Episcopal Community in 2010 (although other Episcopal Community members retained their DOK membership). Some got discouraged. Some passed on to glory. Yet other women who feel called to be Daughters of the King have replaced those who have left us.

All but one of the Provinces reported the formation of new chapters in 2009-2010. As usual most new chapters formed in Episcopal churches, though a surprising number formed in US Anglican Churches as well. In addition, Daughters established at least 20 chapters in five other countries-about one sixth or more of the total number of chapters formed during those two years.

As of the end of May 2011, the national office reported a total of 25,656 members: 22,764 senior Daughters, 1,914 DALs, and 978 Juniors. Ninety-seven percent of the US members are in Episcopal churches. We also have over 2500 members in other countries, though the statistics are almost certainly out of date. We can only estimate the international membership, though it is clear it is growing.

Our membership statistics have resulted from the diligent work of our long time Membership Coordinator, Sharon Stills. Sharon retired at the end of April. During the almost 20 years that she worked in the National Office, she documented the astonishing growth of the Order: membership more than tripled during her tenure. But she did far more than keep track of names and addresses. Most of the chapters installed over the last two decades received initial guidance and encouragement from Sharon Stills. Her service to the Order has been incalculable.

The bottom line on membership? After 125 years God is still using the Order to disciple women and girls on several continents. Let us celebrate God's goodness and His steadfast love!

My husband and I have been traveling this summer from Colorado to points east. I have almost given up reading in the car in order to enjoy the stillness and the passing of the countryside. It is a time of meditation, wonder, and awe. I never cease to be in awe of our Creator God, of the founders of this incredible country and of the people we meet along the way. I feel so blessed to be born, raised and to live in the United States of America. Each state has its own landscape, which influences its economy, which influences its culture and yet we still remain united. One can travel thousands of miles and never need a passport. Since it is July, the month of the birth of our country, I shall give thanks to God and our forefathers who founded this country for creating a country steeped in liberty, and the freedom to worship God, or not, and the freedom to speak the truth as we see it.

Since Province VI is my focus on the National Council of our order, I shall begin with our visit to Cozad, Nebraska for the Nebraska Assembly Gathering, June 11, 2011. Cozad is about 1/3 of the way across Nebraska on Interstate 80. The Daughters at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church were our hosts. It is a small church with two women priests who are also Daughters. The chapter at St. Christopher's is a new chapter and their president, a young woman, owns a feed lot. Cattle are shipped from feed lots. The people of rural Nebraska know that it is God who is in charge. Ann, the president was recently involved in shipping the cattle at the feed lot in the midst of tornado warnings. Weather changes are the norm in rural Nebraska; drought, wind, rain, tornadoes, floods, snow, ice storms are all hazards they deal with yearly. The populations may be small but working together for the good of the people in the community is the norm. Churches of different denominations and other community organizations work together to help those in need. This can present real challenges. At this assembly the daughters discussed how they can connect with each other and meet community needs.   They also elected new officers for the Assembly.

Colorado Springs was the gathering place for the National ECW board from July 13-18. The Province VI ECW members were invited to join them for lunch on Saturday, July 16th. After our time with the National Board, Province VI had their board meeting and nominated a new slate of officers. Sandra Squires, the outgoing president of the Nebraska Daughters Assembly was elected President of the Province VI ECW for 2011-2014.

On Sunday, the 17th, the Order of the Daughters of the KingŪ Province VI Board met to discuss ways to encourage our members to get their dues in on time and to attend the Triennial Gathering in Indianapolis. We also are in the process of nominating a slate of officers for the 2012-2015 Triennium.   We are working on a way to challenge other provinces in the dues process. So far, Province VIII and Province VI are interested in a challenge. We still need to work out details, but ideas are being brainstormed. Do any of the other provinces want to join us?
