Called To Be Perfect As God is Perfect

Many will be observing this Lenten season putting into practice certain discipline. I would like to suggest that rather giving up, try to practice what the Gospel of Matthew is saying in Chapter 6:43-48. In that reading we find Jesus speaking with power and authority. He is establishing a new creation and a different way of life in which we are to behave. Living the same old way is not enough to participate in the kingdom he is establishing. He is now demanding that we love our enemies to become like God. God is a God of love in which He sends rain to pour on the good and the wicked. He also sends the sun to shine on the good and the wicked. He does not take pleasure in hurting or destroying that which He made. If you were living in Jesus' time this would not have been good news, yet it is good news even for us today.

The good news is that Jesus tells us that we must be perfect as God is perfect.

Cultivating Your Prayer Time

After a long, cold winter, it is time to look to spring for new-birth.  Your prayer time also needs to be brought into re-birth with God.  First take time to do some planning, let God help with the planting, and He will bring the rewards of harvesting to you.

  • Planning - Find a place and time to spend some undistracted time in prayer.  A quiet place could be at home, in the garden, or at the seashore.  It is your choice but make it a special place for you to meet God.  The time is also your choice - morning, at noontime, in the evening.  You may find God giving you hints that He wants your presence (like awakening you at 2am).  Be open to His calling.  Use music or candles if this is your way to be centered with God.
  • Cultivating - What to pray for?  Start with yourself and then add family, friends, and special intentions.  Making a list may be helpful.  Don't forget to pray for DOK and the 2012 Triennial.
  • Harvesting - Watch for the blessings God brings to you and others you pray for.  Harvesting never means an end to our prayer life but a time to look toward more planning and cultivating.  Prayer should be a never-ending part of your life as a vow you made with God.  Happy spring.  Happy prayer life.

What's new and exciting in the realm of membership?

The membership in the Order continues to fluctuate slightly throughout the eight  Provinces and is increasing in numbers on the International level.  We find a number of situations that are causing our numbers and chapters to change monthly.  As we approach the spring, let us think about the Order anew and contemplate who we can ask to join..  If each Daughter would think of someone who belongs to a church where there is not a chapter, we can get a fresh start on getting ladies into the Order.  Let us also consider approaching younger women in our congregations.  We can be creative with our ideas to include them in our chapters.  This may entail having more than one meeting time to accommodate working women or stay at home moms.  Perhaps providing babysitting can be an option.

As spring approaches chapter presidents will have the dues packages arriving at their doors.  This is also a time to make an assessment of our membership rolls and to seek out those ladies who have not been a part of the chapter.  We need to reinforce community with Daughters who are unable to attend meetings.   Perhaps we can reach out to our sick and shut in Daughters.  The change in the season allows a time to enter into different thinking and to bloom as a Daughter.  Some Provinces have spring assemblies as well as Dioceses and this gives us the opportunity to join in fellowship with seasoned Daughters and newly installed Daughters.   Let us all stop and enjoy God's creation as we enter into yet another Spring.

How do we say goodbye?

Sharon Stills who has been with the staff of The Order of the Daughters of the King for 19 years, will be leaving us at the end of April.  No, she's not going to a new job, but to retirement with her sweet family.

Her expertise in the area of History, membership and everything will be greatly missed.  We know you, like us will miss her kind voice and loving advice.  If you have some words or pictures of memories with Sharon, please email them to [email protected] or mail them to the office, so we can put together a memory book for her. An online Memory Album will be available soon.

A Plea from the Archbishop of Japan:

"What we can do right now, however, is pray. Prayer has power. I hope and request that you pray for the people who are affected, for those who have died and for their families. Pray for the people involved with the rescue efforts, and in particular pray for Tohoku and Kita Kanto dioceses and their priests and parishioners during this time of Lent."
