World Day of Prayer
| |
Margaret Franklin went to the White House with a group of Daughters to lobby President Coolidge to announce a National Day of Prayer. It didn't happen then, but eventually a National Day of Prayer was established and many churches have participated in ecumenical celebrations in our communities.
There is a World Day of Prayer as well and it will be celebrated on March 4 this year. This would be a great opportunity for Daughters to pray with others around the world. A suggestion would be for DOK chapters to pray on that day. Another way for Daughters to celebrate would be to spend time at 7 or 8pm your time zone for individual prayer. This would spread the prayer time thru the evening hours. So many of us would be spending time with God in prayer. The ECW is also planning to embrace prayer for the day.
There are so many things to pray for: the world and peace among people; the church and its mission; for national life; for social order; for natural order; for family and personal life. Don't forget to pray for the Order of the Daughters of the King and the spread of God's love to others.
As you celebrate this wonderful time of prayer, let me know how you participated so we can highlight your ideas.

International News | |
Pam Runyon, International Chair
It is with thanksgiving and joy that I recall the DOK international "firsts" that have taken place during the past year:
+ First Study/Retreat in Ecuador - At the request of Bishop Ruiz of Central Ecuador, Rev. Margarita Santana, former DOK National Chaplain in the Dominican Republic, traveled to Quito in April to conduct the first Study/Retreat in Ecuador. Among the thirty-three participants were five clergy, including Bishop Ruiz. This introductory retreat was well received, and some of the women are in preparation for the first chapter.
+First Study/Retreat in Europe - In September, Worship and Devotions Chair Marge Rogers and I facilitated the first Study/Retreat in Europe at a retreat center outside of Rome. Seven women from Italy and Germany joined us for this blessed time of study, prayer and worship. After the retreat we met with more than thirty women from the Latin American congregation at St. Paul's within the Walls, Rome. We were surprised by a wonderful "God-incidence" there. Mercedes Tutasig, the women's ministry leader, had been in Quito in April and attended the first DOK retreat in Ecuador! God prepared the way for two possible chapters at St. Paul's-one English and one Spanish.

+First National Assembly in Haiti - Joyce Pipkin, Regional Coordinator for Haiti, and Gail Moulton from GA, did a phenomenal job helping the Haitian Filles du Roi organize their first National Assembly Nov. 13-14. In spite of numerous obstacles, over 200 women attended this joy-filled event, including eight DOKs from the US. Judith Joseph was elected the first National DOK President of Haiti and Kebnire Bernard was elected Vice-President.
+First Chapter in India - Shawnee Irwin from NC and Rev. Janet Echols from Pune, India facilitated the first Study in Durgapur last February, which led to the institution of the first chapter in India on Nov. 25, 2010! Shawnee just returned from another visit to Durgapur this month, where she presented the charter to Women of Faith Chapter at the Episcopal Church's annual thanksgiving service-with 3000 people in attendance!

+First Study Group in the Middle East - After many years of prayer and preparation, the first DOK Study is beginning at Christ Church, Jerusalem. Please pray for God's blessing and guidance as this small group of women seek to share the reconciling power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ with Arabs and Jews in the Holy Land.
In addition to these exciting "firsts," international chapters continue to pray and serve in wonderful ways, and in the past year, many new chapters have been planted in the Caribbean, Brazil, and Africa. Plans are underway for the first study in Mexico, and information about the Order has been requested from priests and bishops in several countries, including El Salvador, Peru and Iraq. Doors are opening for women of faith to pray and serve and change the spiritual climate all around the world! Thanks be to God, and thanks to all who have supported International programs through generous donations and the precious prayers that make everything else possible.

| Seniors of Tomorrow - A Membership Drive |
What is it about this Order that you love so much? Why were you called to become a Daughter of the King? The reason I joined was because I wanted to grow in my prayer life, which really meant I wanted a deeper relationship with Jesus and the Order provided a more devout and intentional way of doing this. I think part of this call is to help us grow in our relationship with Jesus, to love Him, to serve Him, to honor and glorify Him; and also to be in fellowship with other Christian women. All these things are the best part of who we are as Daughters of the King. Isn't it true that we want all women to share in this experience? It should also be true that we want this for our Junior Daughters. But the sad fact is that less that 5% of our Juniors go on to become Senior Daughters. This transition rate is abysmal.
We can and must do better. All Daughters, not just Directresses, must encourage our Juniors to become Seniors. As Mary Davenport, the founder of the Junior Daughters, said "we have responsibility concerning the girls who come within the reach of our influence". At the November 2010 National Council meeting, new procedures were put in place to help Juniors make this transition. These procedures are found in 2009 National Handbook and on the website. Click here Further a Transition Study Guide was approved that can be used by the Junior in a small group or in conjunction with other women going through our National Study Guide for the first time. It is also on the forms part of the website. A Service of Transition is available for use when a Junior makes her vows as a Senior and receives her cross. It is in both the Junior and Senior Handbooks.
Your support of the Alpha Fund has been so generous and is most appreciated. But let's strive to do a better job of increasing our membership by reaching out to the nearly 900 Junior Daughters we have right now and encouraging them to become Senior Daughters. Obviously many of these girls are not old enough to become Seniors but we can still do our part by doing things together and being great role models so that these girls will feel more comfortable when it's time to make that decision. I encourage you to plan at least occasional chapter activities together.
Let us inspire and promote our Juniors; let us foster and mentor them, emboldening them to become Senior Daughters. If you have a Junior Chapter in your church support and pray for your Junior Directress as well as the girls. Do your part to increase our membership by encouraging those who already are members, our Juniors.
When asked why she wanted to become a Senior Daughter, a recently transitioned Daughter answered it this way: "I wanted to become a Senior Daughter because I wanted to make a serious commitment in my spiritual life. I wanted to always have that cross around my neck to remind me of who I was and how much Jesus loves me. I also wanted to become a part of such a wonderful group of women and have their shoulders to lean on."
Funny, that's why I joined.

Email Evangelism-Virtual Vigilance
| |
For many Daughters (dare I say most?) email is our primary way of communicating with other daughters in the chapter, and with potential daughters too. We may use email to share the prayer list and individual prayer requests, and to remind chapter members of meeting times and service commitments.
Recently, a member of our National Council Celebration Chapter received an email (she thought was) from another member of Council, and when she downloaded it she got a virus on her computer. As you can imagine, she was upset and her first reaction was to warn everyone else in the chapter not to open emails from the sender. That's a very normal reaction, but it doesn't address the real problem, and only elevates our level of distrust.
Another member of Council received the
same email message
from the
same sender
and decided not to open it, saving herself frustration and aggravation in the process. How did she "know" not to open the message?
She followed a simple mental checklist to evaluate emails that appear, at first glance, to be sent by people you know.
Look at the email address of the sender and make sure it matches the address she normally uses to communicate with you. Be suspicious of mail sent from AOL if the sender usually uses another email provider.
Look at the email Subject and make sure it matches the style you expect to receive from the sender. I'd be highly suspicious of an email from anyone in my chapter if the subject was "cool pix" or "Ur gonna love this".
If there is an attachment to the message, are you expecting it? Safe files have an extension (the part of the file name at the very end) of .doc, .docx, .pdf, .jpg, .gif There are other files you might recognize as safe, but a good rule is if you don't know what the file extension means, call the sender to make sure they actually sent you the file.
Never click on a file attachment or link in an email that ends in ".exe". This is where you should be most vigilant. If you don't have time to verify that the message is legitimate, you certainly don't have time to take your computer in to remove those viruses.
What can each of us do to make email communications safer for everyone?
Take time to add a descriptive Subject line to your messages so the recipient can see what the content is. A one-word subject like prayers might end up in Junk Mail. Better choice: Chapter Prayer List Best Choice: St. Anne's Chapter Prayer List for February
Resist the temptation to forward emails to multiple names in your address book. If you absolutely MUST share a message with others by forwarding, please protect the privacy of your sisters and friends by removing the email addresses of previous recipients, or by copying and pasting the contents of the message into a new email. Send or forward the message with your email address in the To: line and use Blind Carbon Copy (BCC:) for the rest of the recipients.
Everything we do as Daughters, including emailing, is an opportunity for evangelism and the spread of Christ's Kingdom. As with most things in life, email vigilance is a good thing.
8 Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings. 1Peter, Chapter 5 (NIV ©2010)
Christine Budzowski, Province VIII President
