The Daily Examen is a technique of prayerful reflection on the events of the day in order to detect God's presence and discern his direction for us. It is an ancient practice that can help us see God's hand at work in our whole experience. It's a habit that Jesuits, and many other Christians, continue.

Here are the five steps:
1. Become aware of God's presence.
2. Review the day with gratitude.
3. Pay attention to your emotions.
4. Choose one feature of the day and pray from it.
5. Look toward tomorrow.
For details about each step of the Examen, read How Can I Pray? If you have an Examen rope, start with the cross and reflect through each bead.
*Cross: Invite the Father, Son and Holy Spirit
* P: Presence of God. Sit quietly and ask The Holy Spirit to help you recall your
day in love. Acts 17:28
* G Gratitude: Think of what you are grateful for. John 16:13
* ♥ What's in my heart: "Search me, O God, and know my heart." Psalm 139:23-24
* F Feelings: How do your feelings about people, events, social issues or problems influence the way you deal with them? Jer. 18:6
* R Reconcile & Resolve: Are there wrongs or hurts in your heart which need forgiveness or
repentance? Let Christ through His forgiveness restore your heart. Deut. 30:14-15, 19
Finish with the Lord's Prayer.
Here are instructions to make your own Examen Rope and directions for use:
You will need: 5 letter beads (P, G, ♥, F, R) a cross, 12" of yarn or waxed linen thread.
· Fold thread in half and loop through the top of the cross making a slip knot.
· Tie a knot, and then add the letter P bead. Tie another knot following the bead.
· Add the letter G bead and tie a knot, then the heart, the F, and the R, tying a knot between each.
· Slip a bead of choice on the end and tie a knot to secure it. (I used a silver ♥ charm)

I believe if we use the Examen as a daily discipline we will better be able to keep a clean heart and a right spirit as we make our way through this journey we call life.
