Self-Denial Fund  In-gathering February 2

First, I would like to thank all who have contributed to the Self-Denial Fund.  Every penny you donate goes to missions!  We have been able to fund some very worthwhile mission projects and here are just a few:

·         Purchase of Arabic Bibles for use by converted Muslims in Texas

·         Funds to build a tortilla shop and living area in Guatamala for a single mother to support her family, including a blind and mute child

·         A water system in San Lorenzo, Honduras (SAMS - Jeannie Loving)

·         Sponsoring at-risk students at summer camp in the Diocese of Nevada

·         Continued support for the Godly Play program at the Lillian Vallely School for Shoshone-Bannock Indian students in Blackfoot, ID

·         Continued support for vacation Bible school at Episcopal Cathedral Church of St. John the Baptist in Santurce, Puerto Rico

·         Funding for individual Daughters' mission trips to Ecuador, the Congo, Honduras and the Dominican Republic

·         Funding for Esther Miller's extended mission work in Malawi, Africa.  (Esther was our speaker for Missions Night at the last Triennial)

·         Funding for general expenses for the Red Cloud Indian School in Pine Ridge, SD

·         Funding for two women to complete their studies to become a nurse and a teacher through Mission Namibia, Africa

·         Funding to complete a Christian hostel for women who come from the country to the city to look for jobs in Uganda

·         Through Faith Journeys Mission, funds to help a single mother improve her bakery business, with intentions to employ other disadvantaged women

·         Continued support for Wonderful Days Preschool in Marietta, GA which provides schooling,  free transportation and meals for underprivileged children.

·         Partial funding for twenty students to receive vocational training in Uganda

During these difficult financial times it is hard to find extra money to make donations.  Please find it in your heart to DENY yourself something and send your money to the Self-Denial Fund. If all of us gave $5 we would have $100,000 to distribute to mission projects next year!

Thank You and God Bless You,

Kim Ferguson, Self Denial Fund Chair

A new cross pin/pendant is soon to arrive!

A new cross pin/pendant is coming!!  After watching the integrity and quality of our pewter crosses diminish over the past five years to a totally unacceptable product, and failing to meet resolution with our supplier, the National Office staff decided to seek another source for our pewter crosses.  This was not as easy as it sounds.  A year was spent researching and querying vendors without any luck.  It appears that most jewelry vendors do not work with pewter, and most pewter vendors do not create jewelry.

In the fall of 2010, on Anna Seden's recommendation, the Order commissioned Caledonia Fine Arts to produce a new cross pin/pendant for the Daughters, one we believe will be a great success as a replacement for the pewter crosses (all of which have been discontinued).  The new cross is silver-plated bronze, finished with a dark antiquing to emphasize the words and lines on the cross.  It will be stronger, heavier, sturdier, and polish better than the pewter.  The National Office is very excited about this new cross, but as we have not yet received the first sample or placed the first order, we do not yet have a photo to show you or a firm price.  We have been assured the price will be comparable to that of the pewter.  Delivery is expected in the spring of this year.

We will continue to carry the beautiful silver cross pin/pendants produced by the James Avery Company which the Daughters love.  Please watch for future updates on our website, in the Constant Contact newsletter, and in the Royal Cross

With improvements in digital technology and with more of us becoming well-versed in using this technology, questions have been raised about the use of the DOK name and the image of the Daughter's cross.  To answer some of these questions, National Council has implemented a Trademark License Agreement.  Our formal name, "The Order of the Daughters of the King® ,along with the senior and junior crosses, are registered trademarks. (The logo we use combines both.) The goal is to be good stewards of the name and symbols of our Order.

In practical terms that means a chapter wanting to use the Cross image in printed material utilizing a commercial printer may do so, once they have contacted their Assembly President for permission*.  The Assembly President, in turn, has received the Trademark License Agreement from her Provincial President.  This agreement allows the chapter to use the Cross image on printed materials such as fliers, service bulletins, bookmarks, invitations, programs, directories, business cards, name tags, stationary and note cards (for personal use, not for sale).  Digital images for use on these materials are also available.

If a Daughter wishes to use the trademarked Cross image and/or full name on items other than printed materials (i.e., T-shirts, pens, bags, etc), the request must be made through her Province President.

*A license agreement granting permission for use  is only needed when printing is done by a commercial printer, who is required to ask for proof of authorization before reproducing copyrighted or trademarked materials for a customer. Chapters do not need to request permission if the printed materials are produced on church office equipment or home computer printers.

"In Memoriam" Page Added to the Website

I am pleased to announce the addition of an "In Memoriam" page on our national web site,

www.doknational.com.  The page can be accessed by clicking on the word "Prayer" in the navigation bar then "In Memoriam" or click  http://www.doknational.com/inmemorium.html.  In the past, memorials in the Royal Cross were only for past national presidents.  The Royal Cross editors feel that this webpage will be an excellent way to honor those Daughters who may or may not have been known nationally.   There are currently two different types of submissions on the "In Memoriam" page, which will give you an idea on what types of submissions are being accepted.  Submissions without a picture will also be accepted. Material and memorials for this page may be submitted via email to Phyllis Larson (PhyllisLarson@dok-national.org).  Please include your name, the name of your Chapter, Church and Diocese, and a phone number where you can be reached in case of questions.

EXAMEN YOUR DAY - New Year, New Discipline

During the Province IV Fall Assembly at Kanuga, Doris Bradley presented a workshop on the history and use of the Examen tool. Using beads we made an Examen rope to help review our day to see God's presence in our lives. I found this to be a helpful discipline for self examination, so I pass it along to you.

The Daily Examen is a technique of prayerful reflection on the events of the day in order to detect God's presence and discern his direction for us.  It is an ancient practice that can help us see God's hand at work in our whole experience. It's a habit that Jesuits, and many other Christians, continue.

(Source:http://ignatianspirituality.com/ignatian-prayer/the-examen/)

Here are the five steps:

1. Become aware of God's presence.

2. Review the day with gratitude.

3. Pay attention to your emotions.

4. Choose one feature of the day and pray from it.

5. Look toward tomorrow.

For details about each step of the Examen, read How Can I Pray? If you have an Examen rope, start with the cross and reflect through each bead.

*Cross: Invite the Father, Son and Holy Spirit

                * P:         Presence of God. Sit quietly and ask The Holy Spirit to help you recall your

                               day in love.  Acts 17:28

* G          Gratitude: Think of what you are grateful for.  John 16:13

* ♥          What's in my heart: "Search me, O God, and know my heart." Psalm 139:23-24

* F          Feelings:  How do your feelings about people, events, social issues or problems influence the way you deal with them? Jer. 18:6

* R          Reconcile & Resolve: Are there wrongs or hurts in your heart which need forgiveness or

repentance?   Let Christ through His forgiveness restore your heart. Deut. 30:14-15, 19

Finish with the Lord's Prayer.

Here are instructions to make your own Examen Rope and directions for use:

You will need: 5 letter beads (P, G, ♥, F, R) a cross, 12" of yarn or waxed linen thread.

·              Fold thread in half and loop through the top of the cross making a slip knot.

·              Tie a knot, and then add the letter P bead. Tie another knot following the bead.

·              Add the letter G bead and tie a knot, then the heart, the F, and the R, tying a knot between each.

·              Slip a bead of choice on the end and tie a knot to secure it. (I used a silver ♥ charm)

                                                                   Examen Beads

I believe if we use the Examen as a daily discipline we will better be able to keep a clean heart and a right spirit as we make our way through this journey we call life.

Joyfully submitted,
