Fall Happenings

It's been a busy back-to-school season at St. Stephen's! Our B-READY after-school program is in full swing at St. Stephen's Church in the South End and the Church of St. Augustine and St. Martin (St. A&M) in Lower Roxbury.

Click on the links below to read more about any of these topics in our B-READY after-school program blog.

Our LEARN elementary school program is serving 100 kids in grades K2 through 5. A highlight this fall has been a new emphasis on creative writing projectsThis is a critically important part of language arts learning. The need for extra support in writing is an idea we got from our teacher meetings campaign this fall. In technology class, kids are combining their writing with learning Microsoft Word in fun ways.

25 middle schoolers are part of this year's Youth Leadership Corps. They attend workshops and participate in GroupChats to help them learn about and build healthy relationships. They also planned and led dynamic activities for younger students during our Harvest Day and Halloween celebrations.

Our 28 teens have been working hard as paid Counselors-in-Training in the program and have also done some other great things, such as attending a Poetry Slam at Emerson College, completing an interview skills training with YearUp Boston, and helping to winterize the greenhouse at the Blackstone Elementary School.

All of our young people and families have enjoyed our traditional fall celebrations. Partner churches pitched in to help us celebrate Thanksgiving with a Turkey Wahoo at St. Stephen's and a Turkey Wahoo at St. A&M.  Next up? Everyone is looking forward to our annual Christmas parties, also made possible by the energy and generosity of partner churches.  We can't wait!
A Spotlight on Giving

At St. Stephen's Youth Programs, the season of giving never ends. We are gratefully and joyfully dependent on the generosity of others, including:

  • The talented youth workers who serve on our staff,
  • The 100 B-READY volunteers from local colleges and universities, service organizations, and partner churches,
  • The 900 volunteers from our partner churches who lend a hand with our B-SAFE program during the summer, and
  • The hundreds of you who have supported us with financial contributions over the past year.
All this generosity adds up to make a real difference in the growing up experiences and the futures of our young people.

Or, you may print this gift card to mail in with your gift.  You may also visit our donate page for information about other ways to give.

Contact us to discuss volunteer opportunities.   We can always use extra help during after-school hours. Volunteers may tutor or be an extra set of
hands for a busy Lead Counselor. Other types of volunteer opportunities
are also available. Contact Liz Steinhauser at lizsteinh@netzero.net or 617-262-9070.
