Working Together to Give Hope: Meet Nicole

At just 18, Nicole and her young infant were facing eviction from their Deerfield Beach apartment. After a search for emergency shelters in northern Broward turned up fruitless, Nicole had serious doubts about her future. "I really didn't know what to do next, I was starting to prepare myself for the worst," she recalls.

Nicole says she had all but given up hope when she received a call from her high school friendBrea, who was aware of Nicole's situation and decided to call 211 on her behalf. "I was calling everywhere looking for a shelter for Nicole and one of the shelters recommended I call 211," Brea said.

After speaking with 211 counselors, Brea and Nicole were given referrals to Hope of South Florida's Faith in Action Program and the  North Broward Homeless Assistance Center. "I thought I had looked everywhere in the County but I had only scratched the surface," Nicole said. "How can anyone even begin to know all the programs out there that can help?"

In collaboration with St. Andrews Church, Hope South Florida's Faith in Action Program was able to house Nicole for several nights. Shortly thereafter, Nicole was offered a family unit at the North Broward Homeless Assistance Center, where she says she and her baby are both safe and doing well.

In a follow-up conversation, Nicole encouraged us to share her story so others will know that there is a simple number that they can call to get help. "There are a lot of people who are looking for help but really don't know where to find it. Just telling someone about 211 or calling 211 for someone you know can really make a difference in their life." she said.
