Loss of Use
Our customers ask memany important questions every day there are some questions that are repeated more often than others. With this knowledge I would like to explain a specific coverage that you will find in your homeowners or renters policy.
This coverage is Loss of Use. What is it and why would I ever need it? How does it protect me? The purpose of this coverage is to assist you financially if there was a claim that would cause you to leave your home, such as a fire. The home does have to be deemed unlivable due to a covered claim. Additional living expenses would also include the need for a hotel room and restaurant bills. If you have a policy covering rental property this coverage can be referred to as Fair Rental Value which would reimburse you the amount that was lost due to the home being uninhabitable.

Long Term Care The Federal Government believes that 70% of individuals will need Long Term Care at some point in their lives. The current median cost for in home care is $42,000 a year. Or, if you want to be in a private room in a nursing home, it's about $74,000 a year. Can you afford that? Or, do you rely on your spouse or children to help you? Those out of pocket expenses might run you $100,000 a year. Medicare doesn't cover long term care after 90 days and Medicaid is for the poor. The average life expectancy is now 78. It is projected that by the year 2030, 20% of Americans will be a senior citizens. Many people are living longer and healthier lives. People remain single or they are having smaller families. Kids move away. People get divorced. Are you prepared for the future ?
Long Term Care can be purchased as early as 40 years of age. Of course, the longer you wait, the more expensive it gets. Medicare allows up to 90-day maximum coverage in a full nursing care facility. After that, the money comes from you or your assets. The true value of having this coverage is to release loved ones from the burdens of care giving. A Long Term Care policy will pay the additional cost for any care at home from visiting nurses or medical professionals. This can give you the security of staying in your home and living life as normally as possible. One can still buy a policy like this up to age 80. For example, an elderly man has a stroke and is sent to a nursing facility. It takes one year for him to sufficiently recover enough to go home, but the government only pays for 90 days. At the current rate, he would owe an estimated $7,000 per month times the 9 months that he was in the nursing facility, which equals about $63,000. He and his wife have now spent everything they have in savings and will spend the rest of their natural lives in debt. This is a terrible scenario. If you are interested in purchasing a Long Term Care policy, do not hesitate to call our office. We can discuss all available options with you. |
