Boat Insurance
It is summer time and that makes it the most popular time of year to purchase a boat. It also makes it a great time to take a look at your current policy. Each year there are thousands of boating accidents, and approximately 8000 boats are stolen each month in the U.S. which makes proper boat insurance essential. Insuring your watercraft will vary by the type of watercraft that you own. There are many types of coverage, due to size and speed, etc. A basic rule of thumb is to make sure that your boat liability coverage is the same as your auto liability limits. "Homeowners insurance only offers very basic boat coverage" warns Frank Capparelle Sr. "That coverage may be limited and there are restrictions for what can be covered." Specific policies written for watercraft insurance will have specialized coverage. Options may include water towing, fuel spill liability, marine electronics and wreckage removal. Uninsured boaters coverage is also a great coverage since many of the accidents that happen do result in an injury While injury is very common it is not only good to have the protection for yourself, but you need to consider the coverage if you were to cause the accident. Now having a greater risk factor, there is more you will need to protect. A personal liability umbrella can add one, two, and three or as high as ten million dollars of liability over your homes, cars, motorcycles, boats etc. The umbrella will extend over liability provided by your current active policy. In other words, there has to be an underlying policy providing liability of at least 250/500 limits (some Umbrellas request higher limits). If a liability claim exceeds the underlying policy the umbrella will begin to pay. One court case example had a lifelong boater docking his new 400 ft Cobalt into a slip. A fellow boater was assisting him in docking the boat. The owner of the boat accidentally hit the throttle injuring the helper, causing a significant head injury. The court awarded the injured party $750,000. The insurance held by the owner was limited at $300,000. The insured was responsible for the additional $450,000. An umbrella would have been able to assist in this coverage. The Arizona Game and Fish Department provides a free boat safety course available online. The certification exam is only $2, and will provide you with the proper knowledge that you will need while on the water.
