It's the time of year that Maryland Association of Counties members wait for: the next big event on the horizon is the summer conference in Ocean City.

Take a look at the list of session topics, and there is no end to the challenging and intriguing issues we'll be discussing as we gather in the Roland Powell Convention Center. From First Amendment rights and Watershed Improvement Plans to transportation funding and broadband, all the subjects we deal with throughout the year -- in our own budgets and commission chambers and in the halls of the State House -- will be concentrated in one place.

I'm particularly pleased that Gov. Martin O'Malley has agreed to participate in a forum on PlanMaryland. I anticipate a lively and productive discussion on state planning goals and how they work with county objectives.

I'm pleased to report that the recent spring MACo Board Retreat in Howard County was a great success. Thanks to Del. Maggie McIntosh, State Planning Secretary Rich Hall, Science Services Director Richard Eskin, Transportation Secretary Beverly Swaim-Staley and Blue Ribbon Transportation Chairman Gus Bauman for speaking at our working meetings. We appreciate their time and perceptive thoughts.

I can also report that MACo's finances are solid, and we are well positioned for another successful year.

See you in Ocean City!
