Michelle Frankel, a Conservation Biologist with Audubon Connecticut, is giving a program on creating habitat oases for migrating songbirds in the Blackstone Library auditorium.
Audubon chapters can play an important role in monitoring and providing critical habitat for declining species of migratory songbirds. The goal of Habitat Oases is to identify, improve and conserve important stop-over habitat for migrating songbirds all along the Atlantic flyway, focusing on urban areas and other landscapes where there is limited quality habitat. This program engages volunteer birdwatchers, aka citizen scientists, in migratory songbird surveys of urban green spaces and rural forest remnants.
The program is free and open to the public. Refreshments served. Need more information? Call 203-457-1699 or email program@menunkatuck.org .

Join us for a lecture about the Branford Fire Department, sponsored by the Branford Historical Society, at the Blackstone Memorial Library.
As was the case in most early settlements, the townspeople of Branford Connecticut would first use flames for cooking, warming the environment and manufacturing tools. They would soon find the need to harness the destructive and sometimes deadly force of fire to protect their homes and to preserve their way of life.
Presented by Fire Historian and Archivist Dorrance Johnson, Hoses, Hooks & Ladders is an amazing compilation of facts and photographs that depict the growth and development of the Branford Fire Department. The presenter will discuss the major events that shaped the department from 1899 to 1999. Dorrance Johnson is a retired Branford policeman and over forty year volunteer of the M. P. Rice Fire Department.
