Greetings!
| | Fall color at Jewel of the Creek Preserve. |
We're thrilled to share the news that your land trust is now ACCREDITED by the Land Trust Accreditation Commission! This is an important milestone for our organization, and demonstrates to our supporters, donors, landowners and the community that we are operating according to the highest legal and ethical standards. The 2+ year accreditation process involved a comprehensive look at our practices over the course of our history, so we also honor the incredible work that has been accomplished over the life of your land trust. We've included more information about this national recognition in the story below - we just couldn't be more proud!
As we head toward a new year, and our 20th anniversary, the Board and staff of Desert Foothills Land Trust want to sincerely THANK YOU for the role you have played in helping the Land Trust protect the landscape you love. Even in the busy holiday season, we are grateful for the beautiful Sonoran Desert views when we pause to marvel at a sunset, the yips and howls of coyotes, or even rare time taken for an afternoon hike. Your support of the Land Trust - as donors, volunteers, event attendees, photo contest entrants, landowners, community partners, advisors and ambassadors - makes our land conservation work possible. It also makes it enjoyable! We love to hear from you and invite you to call, e-mail or stop by to share your thoughts and ideas with us.
I also want to encourage you to consider joining us as a member today. If you are already a member, we hope you will consider an additional year-end gift. You can use our website, or mail your gift to Desert Foothills Land Trust, P.O. Box 4861, Cave Creek, AZ 85327.
Your gift will provide a legacy of protected land that will benefit our region for generations to come. Thank you for your commitment!
Wishing you a wonderful New Year,
Desert Foothills Land Trust Visit us at www.dflt.org to learn more about the Land Trust. Thank you for your support! |

The Land Trust Accreditation Commission, an independent program of the Land Trust Alliance, announced this week that Desert Foothills Land Trust has been awarded accredited status.
"Accredited land trusts meet national quality standards for protecting important natural places and working lands forever," said Commission Executive Director Tammara Van Ryn. "The accreditation seal lets the public know that the accredited land trust has undergone an extensive, external review of the governance and management of its organization and the systems and policies it uses to protect land."
"We are thrilled to have received this national recognition from the Land Trust Accreditation Commission. Being accredited enables Desert Foothills Land Trust to communicate to our supporters, elected officials, landowners and the public that we are operating according to the highest standards of legal and ethical practice, and to demonstrate our continued commitment to this rigorous evaluation," said Land Trust Executive Director Sonia Perillo.
Land is America's most important and valuable resource. Conserving land helps ensure clean air and drinking water, food security, scenic landscapes and views, recreational places, and habitat for the diversity of life on earth. Across the country, local citizens and communities have come together to form land trusts to protect the places they love. Community leaders in land trusts throughout the country have worked with willing landowners to save over 37 million acres of farms, forests, parks and places people care about. Strong, well-managed land trusts provide local communities with effective champions and caretakers of their critical land resources, and safeguard the land through the generations.
Desert Foothills Land Trust is one of 113 land trusts from across the country that has been awarded accreditation since the fall of 2008. Accredited land trusts are able to display a seal indicating to the public that they meet national standards for excellence, uphold the public trust and ensure that conservation efforts are permanent. The seal is a mark of distinction in land conservation.
The Land Trust Accreditation Commission, based in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., awards the accreditation seal to community institutions that meet national quality standards for protecting important natural places and working lands forever. The Commission, an independent program of the Land Trust Alliance established in 2006, is governed by a volunteer board of diverse land conservation and nonprofit management experts from around the country. The Alliance, of which Desert Foothills Land Trust is a member, is a national conservation group based in Washington, D.C. that works to save the places people love by strengthening conservation throughout America. More information on the accreditation program is available on the Commission's website at www.landtrustaccreditation.org. More information on the Alliance is available at www.landtrustalliance.org.
"As we head toward our 20th anniversary, we are tremendously proud of the high quality work the Land Trust has been doing, and we are very proud of this national recognition of that work," said Perillo.

| Breaking News - Enhanced Conservation Easement Tax Incentive Passed! | |
On December 17, Congress renewed a tax incentive for private landowners-especially working family farmers and ranchers-who protect their land with a voluntary conservation agreement. The incentive had expired at the end of 2009. Conservation-minded landowners now have until December 31, 2011 to take advantage of a significant tax deduction for donating a voluntary conservation agreement to permanently protect important natural or historic resources on their land. When landowners donate a conservation easement to Desert Foothills Land Trust, they maintain ownership and management of their land and can sell or pass the land on to their heirs, while foregoing future development rights.
The enhanced incentive applies to a landowner's federal income tax. It:
- Raises the deduction a donor can take for donating a voluntary conservation agreement from 30% of their income in any year to 50%;
- Allows farmers and ranchers to deduct up to 100% of their income; and
- Increases the number of years over which a donor can take deductions from 6 to 16 years.
For more information on land conservation options and this tax incentive, contact the Land Trust at 480-488-6131. |
