SHIN SPLINTS
What are they? Any pain in the front of the lower leg is typically refered to as shin splints. Called medial tibial stress syndrome, a shin splint is the inflammation of the sheath surrounding the tibia bone due to pulling of the attached muscles.
Symptoms
-
Overpronation or oversupination of feet.

Over training or increasing training too quickly.

Inadequate footwear.

Running on hard surfaces.
Treatment
-
Acute: Ice/Cold Therapy to reduce pain and infalmmation.

Rest
-
Stretching muscles of lower leg before and after exersice.

Post acute: Heat therapy before exercise to reduce muscle strain.

Shock absorbing insoles.
Prevention
-
Correction of overpronation or oversupination with running shoes or insoles.

Stretching muscles daily.
-
Avoid running on hard surfaces.
-
Avoid overworking the muscles.
-
Massage and/or heat therapy.
