POSE OF THE MONTH: Natarajasana | |
nata = actor, dancer, mime
raja = king 1 Stand in Tadasana (Mountain Pose).
Inhale, shift your weight onto your right foot, and lift your left heel
toward your left buttock as you bend the knee.
2. Reach back with your left hand and grasp the outside of your left foot
or ankle. To avoid compression in your lower back, actively lift your
pubis toward your navel, and at the same time, press your tailbone
toward the floor.
3. Begin to lift your left foot up, away from the floor, and back, away
from your torso.
4. Extend the left thigh behind you and parallel to the
floor. Stretch your right arm forward, in front of your torso, parallel
to the floor.
5. Stay in the pose for 20 to 30 seconds. Then release the grasp on the
foot, place the left foot back onto the floor, and repeat for the same
length of time on the other side.

Issue 6: Balance
| August/Sept 2010
|
Greetings!
My Mom gave me a great book on
Yin/Yang and the I Ching. It got me thinking about the balancing act we do everyday. I think the key is finding the middle way as we
strive for balance...that sweet spot between effort and effortless...the
right combination of action and nonaction...focused attention to meet your
goals, but also enough awareness to be conscious of the
distractions, note them and move on.... being firm, yet relaxed...all
vital tipping points as we embrace
person we are today and look to the person we strive to be.
Balance is the theme for the studio this month. I am going to be teaching a great workshop on balancers this month. We can all use more balance in out lives, so I look forward to seeing you in class and at the workshop.
Peace,
Dawn Hinshaw

| Balance: Steady the mind and the balance with come | |

Balance.
If
you have ever practiced a balancing pose in class before, you might have
heard the teacher talk about drishti, focus, and grounding yourself.
And, the more you do balancers, the more you find that when you fall,
(which we all do) it's more likely due to a wavering of your focus and
attention than a lacking in your physical strength and agility.
The
same applies to life in general. When we are focused on our goals,
when our
mind is calm and when we are well grounded, we will be much more likely
to stay in balance, even when faced with the challenging environment around us. But when our mind races, we jump endlessly from one thing to
the next. It's as though we are walking on a tight rope and even the
smallest of things we
didn't expect might easily "throw us off," or knock us off balance.
Physical
strength and agility don't aid us in navigating stressful situations
or unexpected setbacks as much as a calm and focused mind.
So the next time
you practice a balancer in class, think of it as a test of the mind. Ground
in, steady the eyes, focus on the breath. Then the physical part of the balance
will naturally follow.

What inspires you to teach? Knowing that I might be able to affect one person's life in a positive way. How do you find balance in your life? I surround myself with my family and my closest friends. They see me for who I am and often remind me of that. What is your favorite pose? Downward Facing Dog: seemingly simple, yet entirely complex! How has your personal training career changed as a result of your yoga practice? I have learned that true strength is internal, not external.
