Sombrero Time Children Smiling

catching up with sombrero time

This Fall has been a very busy season.  Our private Spanish programs are in full swing and running at capacity.  We also formed several new partnerships with schools and are excited to be growing.  There are currently 12 school locations in the Granite Bay, Folsom, Rocklin and Loomis areas where up to 700 students are learning to read, write, think and speak in Spanish!

If you are interested in learning more about these new partnerships please click link below to our blog:

Winter registration Now Open!

Our Winter class schedule will include two
new Adult Spanish classes.  Both will follow an exciting new curriculum designed around an international travel theme.

"Pequeño Español"-Every one needs a place to start.  Pequeño Español is moderately paced and focused content.  If you have no formal Spanish background or are interested in re-engaging the language after a long hiatus this class is for you!

"Pronto Español" -For those of you who acquire language quickly or have had a two or more years of language exposure Pronto Español is a great option.  This class will move quicker while providing deeper content and conversational use of language to challenge the student.

Both classes will start on Monday, January 10, 2011 and run for 12 weeks.

Ruth's corner-
"use the language to teach the language"

As a Mom, teacher and business owner I am asked frequently, "how can I learn a second language?"

My first response is well, the way you learned your first language worked great so why not use the same method.  Essentially, what we are doing at Sombrero Time is replicating a student's first language experience.  It's all about exposure!  In a nutshell, our brain develops pathways for the sounds we hear.  It organizes them, creates association to meaning and paves the pathways that are heavily used. I am continually struck by how the traditional US education system typically spends the majority of time instructing a second language, say Spanish, in English.  At Sombrero Time we teach Spanish IN SPANISH from day one. So my first recommendation whether you are a teacher, parent or eager language learner is to put yourself in situations where you hear a lot of the language you want to learn.  Order food, travel, take classes, read books, watch TV, listen to music, download apps, all in the language you want to learn.

As a side note-The value second and third languages provides the generation growing up is undeniable.  I keep finding articles and videos that underscore this fact.  Here is one from the Asia Society.  Check it out and let us know what you think.

At Sombrero Time we believe in giving back to the community we serve.  There is an old African proverb that states, "It takes a village to raise a child".   As parents of three wonderful kids we know this from experience!

That being said, partnering with organizations that seek to enrich children's educational experience and expose them to solid morals rooted in family is a "no brainer" for us.  This year we are proud to sponsor-

Sierra Elementary Sharks

Eureka Youth Soccer Club

EYSC
