USHSR President Andy Kunz was recently in Spain presenting the association's
HSR plans for America and meeting with high speed rail experts, business leaders and government officials. Mr. Kunz also toured high speed rail projects around Madrid including the new tunnel under construction below the city to bring the new northern high speed rail lines into Atocha train station - the main HSR hub in Madrid. This station has more than 15 lanes of high speed tracks with sleek, modern trains constantly coming and going. Mr. Kunz also toured the national high speed rail system control centers, and rode several high speed trains in the cab with the driver. "It was a thrilling experience. Spain is building a massive, state-of-the-art high speed rail network all across their country - it's a great model for the U.S., it makes it so
easy to get around" said Mr. Kunz upon returning from Spain. Kunz was also recently in Albany to give an HSR presentation to a group of business and political leaders.

Thomas Hart, Vice President for Government Affairs at USHSR recently gave a presentation at
the National Conference of State Legislatures in Washington, DC about the many benefits of high
speed rail. A number of state elected officials were present including New York Senator Malcolm
Smith. Mr. Hart recently met with US DOT and Federal Railroad Administration leaders to discuss
ramping up HSR programs across the United States. "We have many challenges ahead of us, but we
are certainly headed in the right direction with great leadership and a new vision at DOT and FRA.
It's exciting times for America!" said Mr. Hart after his meeting.
Joseph Shelhorse, Vice President for Member Services participated in the APTA rail conference
held recently in Vancouver, and has been appointed to 4 APTA committees including High Speed Rail.
Mr. Shelhorse was in Los Angeles recently to make a presentation to a group of business leaders
about the benefits of high speed rail to the city, jobs, the environment, and business. Mr. Shelhorse also participated in a recent high speed rail conference in Chicago hosted by the Japanese International
Transport Institute. "High speed rail benefits even those who have to drive - by reducing the
total number of cars on the roads, easing congestion. This fact extends the many benefits of high
speed rail well beyond the train passengers", said Mr. Shelhorse upon returning from Chicago. |
