EURepack, the European Reusable Packaging & Reverse Logistics Consortium, is a new non-profit consortium, it is open to  business, higher education and research institutes, local governments, environmental and consumer rights groups. Read more here.



 

Plastic v cardboard: which is greener?

Riverford Organics, one of the largest vegetable box schemes in the UK, has suggested it may move away from cardboard packaging and towards plastic.

And in the latest story to emerge involving plastic pallet rental company iGPS, a new civil suit has been initiated by Factory Mutual for trademark infringement related to sweeping iGPS assertions of FM certification of iGPS pallets. Read more here. iGPS has issued a letter to customers in response to the legal action, in essence disputing the magnitude of the misunderstanding, arguing that the amount of pallets involved is minimal. The following reprint underscores early thought about pallet reuse, in essence the emergence of coordinating inbound receiving of pallets under load with their reuse for outbound shipment. "Why Use Two If One Will Do" was featured in The Palletizer, a material handling publication developed during the Second World War by the U.S. Navy Ordnance Materials Handling Laboratory in Hingham, Massachusetts.  Responding to FDA, McNeil Laboratories has recommended a number of business process changes in the area of quality assurance and customer responsiveness, as well as ensuring that only heat treated wood pallets are specified. NWPCA, however, questions whether pallets were really a factor in the tainted product. Read more here.
