National Library Week April 8 - 14, 2012
Whether you are a job seeker looking for resources to land a new job, a parent looking for free activities for children or a student searching for your next favorite book, you belong @ your library.
Today's libraries help level the playing field by making both print and digital information affordable, available and accessible to all people. Libraries provide cultural heritage and genealogical collections, materials in print and electronic formats, job seeking resources, English as second language and citizenship support and many other creative and resourceful programs.
Libraries have historically served as our nation's great equalizers of knowledge. The strength of libraries has always been the diversity of their collections and commitment to serving all people. This National Library Week, join our nation's libraries and librarians by celebrating the place where we all belong.
The Wadleigh Library is celebrating National Library Week by hosting a Patron Appreciation Day on Wednesday, April 11th. |

Who Won the War of 1812? Tuesday, April 10, 7 p.m. Keyes Meeting Room
 | | America's Privateer |
When was the War of 1812? That's a trick question, but if you don't recall America's "Forgotten War" with England -- you're not alone. Two hundred years ago, with only 17 armed ships, a youthful United States declared war on the world's largest navy, 700 ships strong. Then the U.S. invaded Canada. In retaliation the British burned Washington, DC to the ground. So why do we think we won? History writer J. Dennis Robinson offers an upbeat, often irreverent, bicentennial look at New Hampshire's reluctant role in "Mr. Madison's War" with special emphasis on the privateers who swarmed out of the state's only seaport.
This program is funded in part by the New Hampshire Humanities Council. |

Evening Book Group
Tuesday, April 24, 7 - 8:30 p.m. A.V. Room
This month we will discuss Major Pettigrew's Last Stand by Helen Simonson.
"In her charming debut novel, Simonson tells the tale of Maj. Ernest Pettigrew, an honor-bound Englishman and widower, and the very embodiment of duty and pride. As the novel opens, the major is mourning the loss of his younger brother, Bertie, and attempting to get his hands on Bertie's antique Churchill shotgun-part of a set that the boys' father split between them, but which Bertie's widow doesn't want to hand over. While the major is eager to reunite the pair for tradition's sake, his son, Roger, has plans to sell the heirloom set to a collector for a tidy sum. As he frets over the guns, the major's friendship with Jasmina Ali-the Pakistani widow of the local food shop owner-takes a turn unexpected by the major (but not by readers)." Publishers'Weekly Copies are available at the Circulation Desk. Newcomers are always welcome. |

PAWS to Read
Saturday, April 14, 10:30 a.m. Children's Room

Read to a DOG? Not just any dog....
Certified Therapy Pets are a wonderful way to encourage reluctant readers and children having difficulties with reading to become more confident in their ability to read. The use of Therapy Pets in hospitals, rehabilitation centers and nursing homes has been shown to decrease anxiety, lower blood pressure and promote relaxation; the same premise applies to children with reading difficulties.
For those children who cannot yet read on their own, parents & caregivers are invited to read with their children. In order to guarantee your spot, you must register for each session.
Registered children should arrive during the advertised time span and will read to the dog of their choice for approximately 15-20 minutes.
Check our online calendar at www.wadleighlibrary.org for upcoming dates & times. |
