Welcome, Miss Letty!

With the close of 2011, we wish Miss Mary Beth & Miss Joan a happy retirement.  Over the past 20+ years, they have inspired hundreds of children to discover the gift of reading.  While they will be missed, we wish them health and happiness as they start this next chapter in their lives.  They pass the torch to Letisha Goerner, our new Children's Librarian, and two soon-to-be-hired part time Assistant Children's Librarians.

Miss Letty, Children's Librarian"Miss Letty" comes to us from the Tucker Free Library in Henniker where she was the Children & Youth Librarian.  In addition to her MLS degree from the University of Pittsburgh, she has an extensive and unique background in theatre and the arts.  She spent a few semesters studying different types of theatre & film in Scotland's University of Glasgow & Japan's Kandai University in Tokyo.  She also worked in theatre in New York City before hearing the siren call of public libraries.

We are so happy to welcome her into our library family!  If you haven't met her yet, be sure to stop in and say hello.

Sacred Valley of the Incas and Machu Picchu
Wednesdays, January 18th and 25th, 7 p.m.
Keyes Meeting Room

Machu Picchu

Travel with Bryan and Linda Higgs to the ancient world of the Incas (or the Quechua), high in the Peruvian Andes.

On January 18th, tour Peru's Sacred Valley with its fascinating history and amazing beauty, and view local craft-making such as pottery and weaving.

On January 25th, visit Machu Picchu (the "Lost City of the Incas", a remote, mysterious and stunningly beautiful place) and Cusco (the ancient capital of the Incas, full of historical sites and now a bustling city). Our visit to Peru ends with a visit to Lima, the capital of Peru, a large city containing many sites dating back to the days of the Spanish Conquistadors.

Back by popular demand, area residents Bryan and Linda will share their journey back in time to view the remains of structures created by the Quechua society that disappeared with no written record. Many structures were destroyed by the Spanish Conquistadors in the 1500s. What remains today is a testimony to the impressive engineering skills that allowed them to build structures that have withstood the elements, including earthquakes, for 500 years.

Dog and Child Reading

Read to a DOG? Not just any dog....

Certified Therapy Pets are a wonderful way to encourage reluctant readers and children having difficulties with reading to become more confident in their ability to read. The use of Therapy Pets in hospitals, rehabilitation centers and nursing homes has been shown to decrease anxiety, lower blood pressure and promote relaxation; the same premise applies to children with reading difficulties.

For those children who cannot yet read on their own, parents & caregivers are invited to read with their children. In order to guarantee your spot, you must register for each session.

Registered children should arrive during the advertised time span and will read to the dog of their choice for approximately 15-20 minutes.

Check our online calendar at www.wadleighlibrary.org for upcoming dates & times.

Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth, for the touch of a friendly hand and for a talk beside the fire:  it is the time for home.  ~Edith Sitwell

Brew me a cup for a winter's night.
For the wind howls loud and the furies fight;
Spice it with love and stir it with care,
And I'll toast our bright eyes,
my sweetheart fair.
