Mary Beth Choquette and Joan Bajek to Retire at Year's End
It is with great sadness that we announce the imminent retirement of Mary Beth Choquette and Joan Bajek.
"Miss Mary Beth" has been with the library for 18 years-the last 6 years as Head of the Children's Department. "Miss Joan" has worked in the Children's Department for 23 years as a library assistant. Together they were a dynamic duo who worked so well together, library patrons often asked for Miss Mary Joan or Miss Mary Beth Jones.
Through the years they have fostered a life-long love of reading and learning for untold numbers of children and their caregivers. Much to Miss Mary Beth's horror, they even kissed a 14 foot long python weighing more than 100 pounds - all in the name of getting kids to read. Their genuine passion for creating a spark in our pint-sized patrons by bringing the right child together with the right book was obvious to all who visited.
Furthermore, they taught children lessons that will last a lifetime. During one notable summer reading program themed "Read to Feed," children read not for prizes, but for a chance to help those less fortunate than themselves. Kids voraciously read books for the chance to go on a shopping spree to purchase food for SHARE (of course the ride to the supermarket was in two stretch limos but we're sure that had nothing to do with it).
For two decades Miss Mary Beth and Miss Joan have told thousands of stories, planned countless programs, visited hundreds of classrooms and daycares and touched the lives of many along the way. For those who would like to congratulate them on their retirement, we're designating the week between Christmas and New Year's as a "Fond Farewell" week for families and friends to drop-in. In lieu of any gifts, each has expressed their wish for donations in any amount to be made to SHARE. |
Christmas Holiday Closure
The Library will be closed on December 25th and 26th. We will be open our regular hours (9 a.m. - 1 p.m.) on Saturday, December 24th.

PAWS to Read
Saturday, December 10th, 10:30 a.m. Children's Room

Read to a DOG? Not just any dog....
Certified Therapy Pets are a wonderful way to encourage reluctant readers and children having difficulties with reading to become more confident in their ability to read. The use of Therapy Pets in hospitals, rehabilitation centers and nursing homes has been shown to decrease anxiety, lower blood pressure and promote relaxation; the same premise applies to children with reading difficulties.
For those children who cannot yet read on their own, parents & caregivers are invited to read with their children. In order to guarantee your spot, you must register for each session.
Registered children should arrive during the advertised time span and will read to the dog of their choice for approximately 15-20 minutes.
Check our online calendar at www.wadleighlibrary.org for upcoming dates & times. |

I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round, as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys. ~Charles Dickens
One of the most glorious messes in the world is the mess created in the living room on Christmas day. Don't clean it up too quickly. ~Andy Rooney |
