Remember September
As part of The September Project, we're remembering the events of 10 years ago -- September 11, 2001. We have planned a series of events and programs in commemoration. On September 7, we have two guest lecturers to speak about Freedom and Genocide. On September 8 we will host two book discussions, one in the morning and one in the evening. The Children's Room has adopted a soldier, stop in to find out how you can help.
Registration for Children's Storytimes starts August 31st. Are you looking for a knitting support group? Stop by on September 26th to meet Gail, our new knitting coordinator.
The September Project is a grassroots effort to encourage events about freedom in all libraries in all countries during the month of September. |
Due to budget cuts at the NH State Library, our van delivery service has been cut by 40%. This vital service gives us access to library materials we could not otherwise afford; it also enables us -- and NH's 200+ other libraries -- to ship and receive items throughout the state so that we can fill your requests in a timely manner. Last year the van service delivered nearly 1 million items to library patrons.
While we sincerely regret the inconvenience, please expect that your requests may now take longer to fill. If you need something quickly, you may still use your Wadleigh Library card at any other library in the GMILCS consortium. For more information and a list of other GMILCS libraries, see www.gmilcs.org/services.asp
September Project Book Discussions
This month we will have two book discussion groups on Thursday, September 8th. The morning discussion will focus the graphic novel, Persepolis. The evening discussion will cover two books, Don DeLillo's The Falling Man and The Looming Tower by Lawrence Wright. Copies of these three books will be available for pickup in early August. Call the library to reserve your copy today.
Labor Day Weekend
The Library will be closed on Saturday, Sunday and Monday over the Labor Day weekend. |

A Study of Freedom and Genocide
Wednesday, September 7th, 7 p.m. Keyes Meeting Room
The Story of Justin Mazimpaka
A native of Rwanda, Justin was a college student when civil war erupted. He escaped Rwanda 16 years ago and since his library presentation in 2008, he has become a U.S. Citizen. If you missed him then, you don't want to miss his riveting story of survival, escape, and relocation to our very own Milford.
How Ordinary People Commit
Genocide and Mass Killing
Dr. James Waller, Cohen Endowed Chair of Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Keene State College, is a social psychologist who has studied the psychology of prejudice and genocide. His book, Becoming Evil: How Ordinary People Commit Genocide and Mass Killing, synthesizes a wide range of studies to create an impressive theory of how average citizens can come to participate in acts of unspeakable atrocity.
Registration for this event is strongly suggested. Please join us, all are welcome! |

September Project
Book Discussions
Thursday, September 8th
10 a.m. in the AV Room

Persepolis tells the story of a childhood in Iran during and after the Iranian Revolution. Marjane Satrapi, the great-granddaughter of Iran's last emperor, describes growing up in Tehran, a country plagued by political upheaval and vast contradictions between public and private life.
7 p.m. in the Keyes Meeting Room

Ten years after the attack on 9/11 we will take the time to reflect on how we and our society have changed. We will discuss two books - Don DeLillo's fictional account of a survivor and his family in The Falling Man, and Lawrence Wright's The Looming Tower, an examination of the events leading up to the attacks on the twin towers.
Copies of all of these books will be available at the Circulation Desk. Registration is strongly suggested. Please join us for either or both of these discussions.
All are welcome! |

PAWS to Read
Saturday, September 10
10:30am - 12pm
Read to a DOG? Not just any dog...
Certified Therapy Pets are a wonderful way to encourage reluctant readers and children having difficulties with reading to become more confident in their ability to read. The use of Therapy Pets in hospitals, rehabilitation centers and nursing homes has been shown to decrease anxiety, lower blood pressure and promote relaxation; the same premise applies to children with reading difficulties.
For those children who cannot yet read on their own, parents & caregivers are invited to read with their children. In order to guarantee your spot, you must register for each session.
Registered children should arrive during the advertised time span and will read to the dog of their choice for approximately 15-20 mins.

Support Our Marines
Children's Room
This September the Children's Room will be honoring Nicholas Spinosa, a young Marine from Milford, and his unit. Nicholas is a 2009 graduate of Milford High School, and is currently serving in Afghanistan.
Boxes will be available in both the lobby and the Children's Room for leaving notes and cards.
A list of items that are most needed and often difficult for the soldiers to acquire will be posted.
Nicholas will proudly share the kind words and supplies with his fellow soldiers.
Please help us help those who sacrifice so much for our freedom.
Thank you. |
"Time is passing. Yet, for the United States of America, there will be no forgetting September the 11th. We will remember every rescuer who died in honor. We will remember every family that lives in grief. We will remember the fire and ash, the last phone calls, the funerals of the children."
- President George W. Bush, November 11, 2001 |
