First
published in 1918, & set in Nebraska in the late 19th century, this tale of the spirited daughter of a Bohemian immigrant family planning to farm on the untamed land ('not a country at all but the material out of which countries are made') comes to us through the romantic eyes of Jim

March 3rd @ 3pm

Izzy, Willy-Nilly
 by Cynthia Voigt
  izzy willy nilly

Fifteen-year-old Izzy has it all -- a loving family, terrific friends, a place on the cheerleading squad. But her comfortable world crumbles when a date with a senior ends in a car crash and she loses her right leg. Suddenly nothing is the same. The simplest tasks become enormous challenges. Her friends don't seem to know how to act around her. Her family is supportive, but they don't really want to deal with how much she's hurting. Then Rosamunde extends a prickly offer of friendship. Rosamunde definitely isn't the kind of girl Izzy would have been friends with in her old life. But Rosamunde may be the only person who can help Izzy face her new one.

Bring your current knitting project and enjoy some snacks and discussion about the book. New members and beginning knitters welcome!

Copies are available on the teen display. Chicks with Sticks is for grades 6 & up.

for March 2011!

M/S Mt. Washington on Lake Winnipesaukee

February was a snowy cold month, so I wanted to look ahead to March and signs of warmer days.  One event unique to New Hampshire natives is guessing when the official Ice-Out date will be on Lake Winnipesaukee.   It is too late to venture a guess for this year, but last year the official "Ice-Out" date was Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at 2:00pm.  The official date and time "occurs when the ice that has covered the Lake since late December or early January melts enough to allow the M/S Mount Washington cruise ship to navigate between Alton Bay, Center Harbor, Weirs Beach, Meredith and Wolfeboro."   Check out the Winnipesaukee Ice-Out website to see 2011 arial views, statistics and more. Just think Lake Winnipesaukee should be clear of ice this month.  There is hope of warmer weather coming!!!

As we wait for Lake Winnipesaukee to thaw, let's take a look at what is happening here at the Wadleigh Library in March.

Wadleigh News this month includes a note from the Wadleigh Trustees regarding a Wadleigh Library expansion/renovation project, take a look.

Did you know.... you can save a reading list of everything you have checked out of the library....or receive a text message when your holds come in?  How about accessing the library catalog from your mobile device.  Check out these expanded services below.

Our Young Adult programming includes a Teen Cooking program, making Cake Pops & the introduction of a new Volunteer program.  As always check out the Anime Geeks R Us Anime Club, Wii Gaming and Teen Book Clubs.

This months Acoustic Cafe will feature the group Triple Spiral from Providence, RI.   Our Computer Basics class has started back up this month, take a look at the specific topics that will be demonstrated.

For those of you who are looking to send their son or daughter to college this fall, plan on attending Understanding Financial Aid to discuss the college funding process.

We have a timely program sponsored by the NH Humanities Council entitled, A Short Course on Islam for Non-Muslims

March is the first month of a 3 part series on Gardening for Small Spaces presented by members of the UNH Cooperative Extension.  The first program in March will cover, Planning Your Space and Starting Seeds, in April Preparing Your Space, and in May Putting it all Together and Growing Throughout the Season.

AARP Tax Assistance continues this month, check below for details on dates and times, no appointments required first come first served.  The Wadleigh Library is an official IRS Tax Form repository, so stop by and pick up your forms and instructions.

Project
expansionNote from the Wadleigh Library
Board of Trustees.

The Wadleigh Memorial Library board of trustees along with director, Michelle Sampson, have been working on a future library expansion/renovation project. Our library is a vibrant, busy place and the director and staff have implemented many changes to try to enhance the library.  While the town's population has certainly grown since our addition 25 years ago, library use has increased by more than double the rate of population growth in the last decade alone.

The building expansion/renovation project is based on a recent needs assessment.  Our goal is to have a preliminary architectural design ready for presentation to the Capital Improvement Plan Committee this Spring.  This is a community project so please stay tuned for ways that you can become involved.  We will keep you updated in the meantime.

Thanks!!

Ph.D, Yale University and Professor Emeritus of Religion

The foundation of Western civilization rests on three monotheistic faiths - Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The interaction between and among these systems of belief continues to impinge on events in daily life and politics on the world stage and in our communities. Beginning with an outline of Islamic beliefs and practices, we'll then discuss the major similarities and crucial differences among Islam, Christianity, and Judaism.

Presented by Charles A. Kennedy, Ph.D, Yale University and Professor Emeritus of Religion  from Virginia Polytechnic Institute. Dr. Kennedy currently serves on the board of the NH Council of Churches and has written & published extensively in the field of religious studies.

This program is funded by a grant from the New Hampshire Humanities Council and is free & open to all. To guarantee your spot for what promises to be a popular program, make sure to pre-register!

Gardening for
Small Spaces

April 26, May 24
from 6:30-8:00pm

 Presented By:

Marcy Stanton: UNH Cooperative Extension

Master Gardener

Colette Joyce: Master Gardener Intern

If you are an aspiring gardener with not so much space to garden, an experienced gardener with acres to contemplate or anything between, this series of workshops can help you get started on your garden.  Although we will focus on growing in small spaces, you will be able to apply the concepts to any garden space.

Session 1 (3/22) -  Planning your space and starting seeds
Explore using everything from various containers to raised beds for your garden.  Learn what makes a good gardening space and how to test your soil prior to planting.  Get the basics on starting seeds.

Session 2 (4/26) - Preparing your space

Look at options for selecting and improving growing medium in your containers and gardens, explore sources and uses of perennials, annuals, herbs and vegetables, and learn how to care for and transplant your seedlings.

Session 3 (5/24) - Putting it all together & growing throughout the season

Now that you done all the planning and preparation, spring is here, and you are ready to plant!  This session will include tips on planting, fertilizing, pest management and maintenance of your containers and gardens.

Register online for any or all of these great programs or call the library at 673-2408.
