Welcome to the September edition of theWadleigh Library Newsletter. Come September it is time for school to start and we begin the fall harvest as is evidenced in all the wonderful farm stands in our area. Apple picking is a particular favorite of mine, so I decided to look up the apple in The Cambridge World History of Food and found some interesting facts. Apples reached the colonies in the seventeenth century and today there are about 2,500 varieties grown in the United States. The top 8 apples that account for 80% of US production are: Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, Jonathan, McIntosh, Red Delicious, Rome Beauty, Stayman and York. The Golden Delicious was developed by accident in West Virginia near the end of the 19th century and is the most widely consumed apple in the world. Red Delicious is the most popular apple in the US. So make sure you take a trip apple picking this fall, try some different varieties, you never know what you might like.
Our summer reading programs have come to an end, but alot of fun was had by many with great programs and prizes for reading your favorite books. Congratulations to all who participated.
During September we are excited to have three very diverse adult programs. First, Author Lorna Barrett is coming to the Wadleigh Library to discuss her books and sign copies of her latest. Then Nathan S. Webster, a freelance photojournalist & UNH professor of English who was embedded with US forces in Iraq will present a multi-media program entitled "Can't Give This War Away": Three Iraqi Summers of Change and Conflict. For those of you doing family genealogy work, Laura Prescott, genealogist, will present Researching Your Ancestors on the Internet.
This months Spotlight on Technology, features Reference USA, an online database providing information on various Businesses including phone numbers and addresses to names of executives and financial information. Whether you are in Business or looking for a job, this database is a valuable resource.
As always, we hope you will enjoy our programs!! |
Spotlight on Technology "Reference USA" Have you ever needed to find information on a company like the name of the president, who the parent company is, the size of the business, how many subsidiaries they have or determine how many people they employ?
Example of Search Options. | Turn to Reference USA. If you are applying for a job with a specific company and need current company information, such as contact names and financial data, Reference USA can supply the facts you need. Reference USA is an online database the Wadleigh Library subscribes to for our patrons. The U.S. Businesses Database is designed to meet the needs of:
Small-Business owners Entrepreneurs. People looking for jobs People looking for a career change Students doing research for class projects or papers People moving to a new place that need to find local services
Unlike a hardcopy business directory, this database is updated regularly, keeping time critical information current.
US Standard White Pages is the other database contained within Reference USA. This is a residential database used to locate phone numbers and addresses for people. In addition to phone number and address, detailed information provides neighborhood statistics and location maps powered by Google maps.
Reference USA can be easily accessed from the library or the comfort of your own home or business. Just log into the Wadleigh Library website, click on databases and look for the Reference USA Icon.
When accessing the database from outside the library you will be prompted for your library card bar code and pin number. If you have any questions on the use of this database or how to access it, as always please give us a call, 673-2408 or drop us an email we'd be happy to assist.
Each month we spotlight one of the many electronic resources available in the Wadleigh Library. Many patrons don't realize we provide numerous resources that are not in book format. We hope you find this information helpful and as always we are here to assist you with these resources. |
Meet the Author: Lorna Barrett of the Booktown Mystery Series
Saturday, September 11th @11am
Lorna Barrett, New York Times best-selling author of the Booktown Mystery Series, will be in our neck of the woods on Saturday, September 11th. She lives a 'life of crime' in upstate NY, but couldn't be in New England and not stop to visit the town which has inspired her award-winning series. If you haven't read the Booktown Mystery Series yet, you're in for a treat! It's especially fun recognizing familiar places...and dare we say...people? The fourth installment, CHAPTER AND HEARSE, was published August 3.
Ms. Barrett will discuss the writing life and her novels, followed by a booksigning. Toadstool Books will be on hand to sell copies of her books. They make wonderful gifts for yourself or those who love light mysteries (also known as "cozies").
This event is free and open to all. No registration necessary. For more information about the author, see www.lornabarrett.com . |
Can't Give This War Away: Three Iraqi Summers of Change and Conflict
Wednesday, September 15th @ 7pm
Please join us as we welcome Nathan S. Webster, a freelance photojournalist & UNH professor of English. Webster has embedded three times with U.S. forces across Iraq. Tonight he will present a multi-media program sharing his observations of the evolution of the U.S. mission from 2007 to 2010. Topics of discussion will include controversial decisions, the changing attitudes of junior U.S. soldiers, and what the 'reconcilation' with former Iraqi enemies looked like up close. Webster's reporting and photography has appeared in newspapers nationwide. He has an MFA in Writing and is an adjunct professor at the University of New Hampshire.
This program is presented as part of the worldwide September Project--a grassroots effort encouraging community discourse on topics of democracy, citizenship & patriotism. As always, the program is free and open to all. Sign up on our online calendar to guarantee your spot as space is limited. For more information about the September Project, go to www.theseptemberproject.org.

Researching Your Ancestors
on the Internet
Wednesday, September 29th @ 6:30 pm
Please join us tonight as Genealogist Laura Prescott presents a program entitled "Researching Your Ancestors on the Internet." The Internet offers family historians a treasure trove of resources and information. But for every accurate and well-researched website there are many others that have inaccurate or falsified information.
Understanding which sites are reliable, how to locate information on those sites, and how to use and cite the information properly are all discussed in this lecture. There are a number of websites that we never think to use for family history information. Most sites can be accessed free of charge, but a few are membership or subscription based. All are among the most useful and reliable resources for anyone pursuing genealogy at any level.
Learn the pleasures and pitfalls of doing genealogy online as we explore some of the most popular, as well as some of the hidden websites for genealogy and family history.
Audience Level - Beginner to intermediate.
