Welcome to the August edition of the Wadleigh Library Newsletter. When I think of August, I anticipate the Dog Days of summer, those hot and humid days. This year we have already experienced Dog Days in July. This got me thinking about where the expression Dog Days of summer came from. I did some research and found in the book Chase's Calendar of Events that Dog Days are actually a defined period of time from July 3 - Aug 11 that represent the hottest days of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. The reference to a dog pertains to an ancient belief (that is no longer true) that Sirius, the Dog Star, rose just about the same time as sunrise during this time. So our Dog Days in July are in fact on schedule, you learn something new every day.
Have you ever wondered how to download an audiobook or eBook from the library? This month we are offering a program entitled Downloading Digital Audiobooks and eBooks from your Library. We are very fortunate to have Bobbi Slossar, Technology Resources Librarian for the NH State Library presenting this program.
This months Spotlight on Technology, features Novelist an online database that provides patrons with numerous ways to search for books to read. In addition to searching by title and author, Novelist provides tools to search by genre, plot, series, readalikes (books like what you have read) and more. When you are looking for something new to read, give Novelist a try.
The Tri-Town Book Group will continue their summer program reading their final selection and meeting to discuss it at the Wilton Public and Gregg Free library in Wilton.
Enjoy our programs!! |

Spotlight on Technology "NoveList" Coming Soon! Fast, Fun and Easier Ways to Look for Books YOU Want to Read! NoveList® a long time online book search tool is upgrading to become the ultimate search engine for finding the books "you want". As many of you may know NoveList® is an online tool used to search for books by author, title, reading level and subject matter, much like you would when using the Wadleigh online catalog. Its current version is being upgraded to a cleaner, more user friendly and easy to understand search engine. Displayed on their front page will be a list of best sellers that you can glance at to see what's new and popular. If you let your pointer rest over the book, more information and a brief summary of the book will appear. Directly below each best seller they list 3 books similar to the one above. One of my favorite functions is the search bar. NoveList® lets you type in something like "women, detective, supernatural, fantasy" in its search bar from which it will pull up all the books that have that in their plot description. It may even lead you to new authors you'd never heard of that are writing about what YOU want to read. This is especially nice when you are bored with what is on the bestseller list and want to discover something new. Another new function NoveList® added is a checklist on the side which can help you find books similar to ones you have read or something new. This list includes plot functions and/or subjects similar to what you have been searching for; if you want to get more specific or more general just check the boxes on the side of the page. You can even limit it by publication date, so if you want something more current than the 1960's you can make sure it looks for more current books.
Finally my third favorite thing about the new NoveList® is the appeal terms. When you click to look at a specific book's page there is a list that tells you why that book appeals to people (Like the book was "Atmospheric" or "Offbeat" or just plain "Funny"). The page will also give you the writing style in the book so you can decide if it will keep your interest longer than a few pages. Some people like "fast paced" while others prefer the "relaxed pace". These are just a few of the wonderful new things to look forward to when the new NoveList® is officially released in August. In the meantime you can try out a beta version of the search engine by accessing the NoveList® website from Wadleigh's "Online Resource" tab. Once on NoveList® click the link to try the new Beta version and have fun.
Special thanks to our library intern for providing this review of Novelist for our newsletter. Each month we spotlight one of the many electronic resources available in the Wadleigh Library. Many patrons don't realize we provide numerous resources that are not in book format. We hope you find this information helpful and as always we are here to assist you with these resources. |
