The town of Milford's "big trucks" will be back in our parking lot again for a hands-on tour. Children can get up close and personal with a fire engine, police cruiser, ambulance, DPW truck and more. Parents should be sure to bring cameras. Hard hats will be given to the first 100 visitors.

Welcome to the Wadleigh Memorial Library July Newsletter.  We are half way through the calendar year and it it time to celebrate our Independence!  How time flies!  To make your July memorable and fun be sure to visit the library and attend some of the many programs we are running.   Our Children's program is in full swing, Make a Splash, READ! along with our Teen program, Make WAVES at your Library
 
Family programs are plentiful in July, attend a magic show with Reuben Moreland, Play Bingo with the FamilyBuild a book, or attend the Robert Rivest Mime show!   Wildlife Encounters returns this month with a new program, Global Safari, bringing a "virtual safari" to the library. 
 
How about taking the family to a Museum?  In addition to adding the NH Children's Museum to our list of museum passes, we have added the New England Quilt Museum.   We hope to add the New England Zoo in the very near future.  Many thanks to the Friends of the Library for providing these great discounts.
 
Children's programs include but are not limited to, Big Truck DayPrincess Teas, Make a splash programs, Art Classes, the Toe Jam Puppet Band and the ever popular Legos Block Parties.
 
For our Young Adult patrons join in the Teen MarioKart Tournament with other libraries or express your  musical abilities using Band Hero in the Battle of the Bands event.  Participate in the "60 Second" Challenge or come for Water Games, but plan on getting drenched!  Craft Wednesdays is another favorite running again this summer with new ideas.
 
New to the newsletter this month is a segment called Spotlight on Technology, which will feature electronic resources available to our patrons in the library.  This month we are featuring the Auto Repair Reference Center, take a look.
 
Two book clubs are offered for Young Adults this summer, the very popular "Chicks with Sticks" and a new book club called "Pizza and Pages".   Join one now and make your summer reading experience even more fun!
 
The Tri-Town Book Group will continue their summer program reading a new selection and meeting to discuss it at the Daland Memorial Library in Mt. Vernon.
 
This is the last month to enter into the Children's Room Fund Raiser, make a contribution if you can.  Thank you!

The Wadleigh Library is excited to offer discounted passes to several new museums this summer.
 
 The Children's Museum of NH 
  Located in Dover, NH The Children's Museum of NH
opened it's doors in July, 2008.  It's interactive exhibits are for children of all ages, toddlers to middle schoolers.  (formerly the The Children's Museum of Portsmouth)
 
The New England Quilt Museum
Located in Lowell, MA, the New England Quilt Museum collection includes over 225 antique and contemporary quilts and tops, plus numerous related textile and sewing items, representing the history of American quiltmaking.
 
 Zoo New England (coming soon)
 Zoo New England is a non-profit organization that operates both the Franklin Park Zoo in Boston and Stone Zoo in Stoneham, Massachusetts.  We hope to have passes soon.

"Auto Repair Reference Center"
 
If you like working on your own vehicles but can never find the right manuals, this resource is for you.  Auto Repair Reference Center  is an online database the Wadleigh Library subscribes to for our patrons. 
 
auto3diagramAuto Repair Reference Center provides extensive information on almost every make of car, truck and van, foreign or domestic and built from1945 to 2009.  For each vehicle the database provides repair procedures, service bulletins and recalls, wiring diagrams, labor, specifications, and maintenance intervals. There are additional tabs of information on troubleshooting, Auto IQ, and care and repair tips.  All this information can be viewed online or printed out to take with you to the garage!!

The Auto Repair Reference Center database can be accessed from home or from the library using a personal computer.  Logon to the Wadleigh Library website and click on the online resources tab, click on Automotive Repair, click on the Auto Repair Reference Center  icon, put in your library barcode and your pin!

tritown3rd Annual Tri-Town
Book Group
 
Once again the libraries of Milford, Mont Vernon and Wilton join together to present the Tri-Town Book Group series of book discussions. This year the series topic is Contemporary New England Voices, funded by the New Hampshire Humanities Council, which features authors who have contributed modern stories to the long literary tradition of New England. 
 
weight of waterOn July 21st at 7pm at the Daland Memorial Library in Mt. Vernon, the group will discuss The Weight of Water by Anita Shreve.  The talk is facilitated by Dr. Kathleen Cain, professor at Merrimack College. For more information call the library at 673-7888.
 
 
park cityOn August 18th at 7pm the third and final discussion will take place at the Wilton Public and Gregg Free library in Wilton.  The group will discuss Park City: Collected Stories by Ann Beattie, led by Suzanne Brown, visiting Assistant Professor at Dartmouth College.
 
NH humanities councilCopies of each book will be available for loan at all the libraries and all meetings are free and open to the public.

Summer Reading 2010 
 
Calling all readers and their families!
 
As summer sails in it's time to kick back, relax and read for fun! Tots through children entering Grade 5 are invited to join the Wadleigh Memorial Library's summer reading program. In addition to tracking reading progress, children can enjoy mime and musical mischief, bedtime bingo and book clubs, mad science, live night creatures, reading raffles and so much more.
 
All activities are FREE and open to children of all abilities. Registration forms will be available at the library beginning June 18th. Children will need a Wadleigh Memorial Library card in order to participate. No card - no problem; getting a card at the library is quick and easy and it's FREE! Everyone who registers as a summer reader can pick up a free book to help jumpstart their summer reading.
 
Be sure to get the most up-to-date information all summer long by visiting our online calendar or stop in for more information and a schedule of events.

 Award-winning NYC magician Reuben Moreland, recently named National Champion in the World Teen Championships of Magic in Las Vegas, will dazzle his audience. Reuben, a high school Junior, is considered one of the top young magicians in the country and has studied and performed with some of the top magicians working today. This promises to be a fun and educational adventure with all things creepy!  This live animal presentation will take you on a "virtual safari" around the globe. As you "visit" different regions & habitats you will learn about & meet some animals that call these places home.
This program is recommended for children 5 and older. All children under 5 must be seated with an adult.

"Laughter brings joy to both heart and mind."
 
Back by popular demand, comic mime Robert Rivest will present a series of mime and comic stories about swimming, sailing, surfing and all round summer fun. This hilarious show is full of audience participation and laugh-out-loud interactive pieces.
 
Tickets are required for this event and will be available to Wadleigh Library Card holders beginning Wednesday, July 21.  Any remaining tickets will be available to the general public on the day of the show.
 
Please note this program will be held at the Amato Center and is for children 5 and older only.  Doors will open at 6:30pm!

Children entering Grades 3 - 5 will go "fishing" for water-related objects and information in the library. Two teams, equipped with scavenger list and pencil, will have approximately 35 minutes to complete the hunt. Prizes will be awarded and snacks served.
