"Cheap: the high cost of discount culture"
by: Ellen Ruppel

Ever wonder if you're thrifty, or cheap, when you drive an extra 10 miles to buy gas for 5 cents less?  Wonder who first had the idea for a mall or, even better, an outlet mall?  Shell, a correspondent for the Atlantic, evaluates America's penchant for making and buying cheap products while assessing the true economic, political, and psychological costs of such goods, in a report that argues that a focus on low prices is promoting negative practices.

Wash Away Your Fines
was a big success!

Several boxes of items were collected last month during National Library Week when patrons paid off their fines by bringing in new soap and cleaning products.  All these items have been donated to Bridges in Milford, a non-profit agency dedicated to helping victims and survivors of domestic and sexual violence.

We would like to thank all our patrons who participated in this program and made a difference in someone's life.

hikeIt's Not about the Hike
Tuesday, May 11th
7:00pm-8:30pm

hikingThis hour-long presentation highlights the journey of two 50+ year old non-hikers who one day decided to climb the 67 mountains in New England over 4,000 feet. Nancy Sporborg and Pat Piper are two ordinary women who went on an extraordinary journey over the mountain summits and into their hearts. This is the story of what they found inside themselves as they hiked over 1,000 miles to the tops of over 170 mountains through all four seasons.

Theirs is not a story of look at us...we did this. It is a story of look inside you...you can do this too. The program is a multi-media presentation including movies, music and photographs. It is both humorous and touching, as the speakers share from their hearts about their personal lives in a way that makes the message and learning universal.

The Children's Librarians would like to extend a great BIG "thank you" to local graphic artist Matt Duchesne who once again has donated his time and talent to the Children's Room.
