Wadleigh Library - Architectural Contest
The Winners Are . . . .

AIANH

The 2010 AIANH Intern/Young Architect Design Competition results are in. Their project was to design a renovation and addition to the Wadleigh Memorial Library in Milford, NH.  As we mentioned in last months newsletter, the results would be announced in January.

The final decision was made by a board of three Jurors; Bill Schoonmaker AIA, Schoonmaker Architects, Durham, NH; Leslie Thomas AIA, Thomas Bracy Architects, PLLC, Concord, NH and Michelle Sampson, Director, Milford Library, Milford, NH.
The winner of the competition was Brian Murphy AIA and Alyssa Murphy AIA.  Jury Comments: This submission proposed a building expansion to the east, thus creating an interesting massing strategy and a novel and thoughtfully located exterior amphitheater. The design created a nice spatial progression from each of the three building entries; the historic entry, the main library entry, and the children's library entry. Overall, this proposal solved programmatic, siting, and massing issues most successfully. The "books-on-shelf" imagery was quite engaging, as well. A very nice and well-developed presentation.

The competition was open to all architectural interns and architects within five years of registration, living or working in New Hampshire.  For the competition specifications and images of all entries go to: aia nh winners.

New Software To Enhance Public Computer Use!

The Wadleigh Library will be implementing a new print and time management system for our public computer usage.  EnvisionWare is a tool that will optimize computer usage, insuring patrons equitable time on the computers.  Patrons will be able to manage their computer time efficiently with less staff involvement. This tool also manages print jobs, providing patrons with more control over the exact number of pages to print, minimizing the amount of scrap paper produced.

Keep your eyes open, we will be posting information about the upgrade this month.  We are very excited to be able to offer this new technology to our patrons.

Quote of the Month:

"I have often thought that nothing would do more extensive good at small expense than the establishment of a small circulating library in every county, to consist of a few well-chosen books, to be lent to the people of the country under regulations as would secure their safe return in due time."

President Thomas Jefferson in a letter to John Wyche,
May 19, 1809.
