Understanding the Sacrifice of Military Families
A new survey, War and Sacrifice in the Post-9/11 Era, from the Pew Research Center found that a majority of Afghanistan and Iraq War veterans believe other Americans do not understand the diverse challenges that soldiers and their families face. These challenges include long separations, physical and psychological injuries, and stress. Most American civilians who participated in the survey are proud of and grateful for those who serve; however, most agree that they do not understand the realities of military life.
This Veterans Day, civilian families can gain a better understanding of war and the sacrifices of our military families by talking with a veteran or a soldier's family, or by visiting the Veterans History Project(www.loc.gov/vets/about.html), which is part of the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. The Veterans History Project has collected stories of veterans who participated in wars from World War I through Afghanistan and Iraq, so that current and future generations will better understand war. Military families may also contribute their stories to the project to promote better understanding.
This Veterans Day, take a moment to thank a veteran for his or her service to our country - we know they deserve it. If you have served America during war time or peace time, we honor your service. If there is any way we can serve you better, please let us know.
