Mental Health America of South Carolina would like to announce our new partnership with the Columbia Children's Theatre in their September production of the musical Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day and the IC HOPE program. "Children's Mental Health Night at the Columbia Children's Theatre" will be held on Saturday night, September 17th. Find out below how you can get involved!

 

We also invite you to join us for our First Anniversary Celebration of This and That Thrift Shop on July 30, 2011. Come enjoy refreshments, music and a "2 for 1 Sale" at This and That Thrift Shop!

 

There are several events planned for the fall. Find the Out of the Darkness Walk nearest you and get involved today! Join us for the Midlands Postpartum Conference on October 7, 2011 and the Faith Based Conference at Cornerstone Church in Orangeburg, SC on September 23, 2011.

Mental Health America of South Carolina and Columbia Children's Theatre are partnering to use the arts to encourage

Mental Health America and the Columbia Children's Theatre announce the opening of the children's musical Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

with Special Guest IC HOPE!!!!!

 

Special Performances of Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day will be held on September 16, 17, and 18 and September 23, 24, and 25.

 

"Mental Health Night at Columbia Children's Theatre" will feature 100 free admissions for MHASC friends and an after-show party with IC HOPE and the cast of the play.

Mental Health advocates are invited to participate in the Mental Health Resource Fair and attend the show for free.

 

 During the week of September 19- 23,elementary school children from neighboring school districts,children from day care centers, home school programs and other educational venues will be brought to the theatre each morning to enjoy the show and learn from a discussion with IC HOPE about good mental health.

 

  

 MHASC is currently seeking sponsors for this event.

Out of the Darkness Walks for Suicide Prevention Planned for Fall 2011

The Out of the Darkness Community Walks are 3 to 5 mile walks taking place in over 300 communities across the country this fall.

By walking in the Out of the Darkness Community Walks to benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), you will be walking with thousands of people nationwide to raise money for AFSP's vital research and education programs to prevent suicide and save lives, increase national awareness about depression and suicide, advocate for mental health issues, and assist survivors of suicide loss.

This July, 2011, Mental Health America of South Carolina celebrates the one year anniversary of the This & That Thrift Shop. Supported by funding from Frist Citizens Bank, this shop provides vocational training for the clients at Bridges Clubhouse in Cayce, SC and all proceeds benefit Bridges Clubhouse.

 

Come join us on July 30, 2011 at This and That Thrift Shop at 2238 Airport Blvd. Springdale, SC 29170 from 11 am to 2 pm. We will have live music, door prizes and a "2 for 1 Sale" at This and That Thrift Shop.

Postpartum Depression and The Family Conference

The Midlands Postpartum Coalition, NAMI Mid- Carolina, Dorn VA Hospital, and Mental Health America of South Carolina are hosting the 3rd annual conference on Postpartum Depression and the Family.

Speakers Include:
                               

James F. Paulson, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Psychology at Old Dominion University. He is the author of over 30 publications on prenatal and postpartum depression in fathers.

 

Stephanie Berg, MD is the Medical Director of The Women's Emotional Health Center at Midlands Psychiatry in Columbia, SC and a psychiatrist at Palmetto Health Behavioral Day Program. She has a particular interest in mood disorders in pregnancy and the postpartum, premenstual mood disorders and perimenopausal mood disorders.

 

Dr. Judy McKay is a Child and Adolescent psychiatrist specializing in treating children ages 4 - 18 at the Pisgah Institute in Asheville, NC. Before moving to Asheville she ran a "Peripartum Mood Disorder Clinic" in the Department of Neuropsychiatry at the University of South Carolina.

 

The cost is $45.00 if received by September 1, 2011 and $55.00 after. Registration must be received by September 30, 2011. A boxed lunch is included with the registration fee.

Mental Health Art exhibit to be held at Anderson Arts Center

 

On July 29, 2011 through September 2, 2011 a mental health art exhibit will be held at the Anderson Arts Center at 110 Federal Street, Anderson, SC. There will be approximately 120 pieces of art in the exhibit.

 

The project is a unique collaboration of South Carolina Department of Mental Health Centers and other mental health service organizations.

 

The exhibit will include artwork from the Anderson-Oconee-Pickens Community Mental Health Center, Beckman Center for Mental Health Services, Greenville Mental Health Center, Patrick B. Harris Psychiatric, the Art of Recovery, Mental Health America, and the AnMed Health Cancer Center Infusion Center.
