April 2011- Walk, Run, Bike, Rollerskate for Suicide Prevention

 "500 Miles for Suicide Awareness"

Clip Art runners

Every year South Carolina loses over 500 lives to suicide. Let's work to reduce those numbers. During the month of April, you can participate in the "Run to Honor & Remember in April" by recording your daily miles spent walking, running, biking, skating, or even walking on the treadmill. You may want to exercise for 1 mile on Monday, 2 miles on Tuesday, etc. to add up to your total miles by April 30, 2011.

Pledge sheets are available at the following link:

Click Here for Pledge Sheet Ask you friends, coworkers, and family to sponsor you on your pledge sheet and to make donations to the cause of suicide awareness and prevention!

Together we can honor and remember 500 lives by running 500 miles.

With an average pledge of $1.00/mile, we can provide Mental Health America of South Carolina with $500.00; enough to train 75 gatekeepers. 5,000 miles would allow for 10 new Suicide prevention Instructors

to be certified. 50,000 miles could pay for every university of South Carolina and Clemson University freshman to be trained.

"500 Miles for Suicide Awareness" was created by Lauren M. Stalcup of the Chidren's Advocacy Law Society at the University of South Carolina Law School as a way to raise awareness and to contribute to suicide prevention efforts in our state. All funds raised will benefit Mental Health America of South Carolina's Suicide Prevention Programs.

Suicide is the second leading cause of death for college students and the third leading cause of death for 15-24 year olds. Help us put a stop to these tragic deaths.

Print a pledge from the above link or contact Anita T. Baker at Mental Health America of South Carolina at 803-779-5363 to make a donation and get moving in April to save lives through education, awareness, and prevention!

April is Alcohol Awareness Month

Alcohol plays a regular role in many aspects of society. From a Happy Hour beer to champagne celebrations, drinking can be a common part of life. But because it is so common, it is often difficult to realize when alcohol becomes a problem. If you find yourself
drinking to feel good or to keep from feeling bad, it might be time to take a closer look.

April is Alcohol Awareness Month and it is the perfect to assess your alcohol dependence. Mental Health America of South Carolina has added Alcohol Dependence to the Screenings that we provide on on website year- round. Click on the following link and participate in a confidential screening today.

If drinking has caused a problem in your life, you have a drinking problem.

Here are some signs to watch for:

Feel guilty or ashamed about your drinking.

Lie to others or hide your drinking habits.

Have friends or family members who are worried about your drinking.

Need to drink in order to relax or feel better.

"Black out" or forget what you did while you were drinking.

Regularly drink more than you intended to.
