Image: Entry in a political pumpkin carving contest (call # PSN - Pumpkin)

In October of 1992, the employees of St. Luke Medical Center were invited to submit pumpkins carved in the likeness of the Presidential candidates. Of those that were submitted 55% were in the likeness of Ross Perot, 22% Bill Clinton, and George H.W. Bush and Garfield the Cat had 11% each.

This image is from the Pasadena Star-News photo archives, which were donated to PMH in 1995. The collection is particularly strong in local images from the 1980s and 1990s.

Pacific Electric Railway: Then & Now
Willis Stork Gallery
Wed - Sun, Noon to 5:00 pm; Open through January 13, 2013

The Pacific Electric Railway and its 1,100 miles of track connecting Southern California's communities ceased operation by the 1960s.  It has become more relevant in recent times due to the MTA's installation of the light rail in many of our communities.  Many of the modern MTA lines follow what were once Pacific Electric routes.  This exhibition, co-curated by Michael Patris and Steve Crise, showcases rare images from our past and compares them with what can be seen in the same locations today.  The exhibition also features railway objects and ephemera, including an original advertising painting from the Pacific Electric Railway that is being publicly displayed for the first time in generations.  Three new paintings by renowned artist Harlan Hiney, who uses historic images to create new works of art, are also on display.

What A Long Strange Trip It's Been:
35 Years of the Pasadena Doo Dah Parade
Ralph M. Parsons Foundation Gallery
Wed - Sun, Noon to 5:00 pm; Open through January 13, 2013

What A Long Strange Trip It's Been is a colorful, fun-filled exhibition celebrating the wacky world of the Doo Dah Parade, named "America's Best Parade" by none other than Reader's Digest.  View photos of the parade and crowd shots; vignettes of entries - including the Synchronized Precision Marching Briefcase Drill Team; costumes and memorabilia of various Queens and music groups; and a re-creation of the scene at Pasadena's former Chromos Bar, where this all (fortunately, or not) began.

Dressed in Diamonds: American Princesses & Gilded Age Fashion

Thursday, October 4, 7:30 pm

During the Gilded Age, the veneer that separated the Yankee worker from the European gentleman was thin, and the Industrial Revolution's greatest asset-money-helped to gild American, and re-gild European, societies. For the most part, this highly reflective gloss was applied with layers of elaborate dresses and overlapping jewels worn by the 'Dollar Princess' daughters of these 'Robber Barons.'

In an illustrated presentation Kevin Jones, curator of the FIDM Museum at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, will discuss five of these women: Jennie Jerome, Consuelo Yznaga, Consuelo Vanderbilt, Helena Zimmerman, and May Goelet.

Tickets: Textile Arts Members $5; Members $10; Non-Members $15. Reservations suggested.

Not Just Another Pretty Vase: The Story of American Art Pottery

Sunday, October 14, 2:00 pm

The art pottery movement began in the late 1870s as a result of the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia, the writings of English design theorists, and the fashionable women's hobby of china painting. In his presentation, Donald S. Hall, an authority on the subject, will examine works of the Rookwood Pottery of Cincinnati, along with other potteries including Roseville, Weller, and Tiffany. He will pay particular attention to some monumental works from the Van Briggle Pottery that are in the Fenyes Collection, and how this pottery fits into the larger picture.

Tickets: Members $10; Non- Members $15. Reservations suggested.
