Image: Detail from a valentine that was made by John Nicoll for Eva Scott Fenyes, 1909 (Fenyes-Curtin-Paloheimo Papers, Box 55, Folder 1)
John Nicoll (1865-1943) was born in Newburgh, New York. Nicoll studied in Paris for three years at Acadmie Julian under Bouguereau and Ferrier. He continued at Academia Real in Seville and in Rome. Three winters were spent traveling in North Africa. By 1899 he had settled in Pasadena, where he met artist and art patron Eva Scott Fenyes.
The prose in this valentine makes it apparent that Nicoll knew Eva quite well: "A lady most wonderfully clever, At something she's working forever, She can paint, she can play And talk all the day In any language whatever."

Southern California's Evolving Landscape: The Photography of Helen Lukens Gaut (1872-1955) Ralph M. Parsons Foundation Gallery Wed - Sun, Noon to 5:00 pm; Open through February 26 Helen Lukens Gaut established a successful career as a photojournalist in the 1920s. She taught herself how to use a camera in order to illustrate her articles and document her travels. Her pieces appeared in numerous magazines including One West, Overland Monthly, Cosmopolitan, The Craftsman, Ladies' Home Journal, and House Beautiful. Her pivotal articles on bungalow architecture emphasized the low cost of construction and floor plans which suited the evolving Southern California lifestyle. Some years ago, a chance meeting of a connoisseur of photography and a well-respected historian resulted in a major gift to PMH. In 2002, Richard "Blue" Trimarchi, President of Art Works Fine Art Publishing, shared a collection of approximately 200 negatives taken by Helen Lukens Gaut with Museum Trustee Emeritus Dr. Robert Winter. Dr. Winter was excited by the importance of the images taken by a woman photographer in the second decade of the 20th Century. The collection was purchased with a generous donation to the Museum by Alyce de Roulet Williamson. Although these holdings certainly do not comprise all of Gaut's photography, they do reflect the essentials of her life -- especially her interests in nature, motoring, and architecture. Open through February 26 In an era when well-to-do families took a special interest in creating significant and valuable collections, Pasadena's Eva Scott Fenyes devoted her discriminating tastes, vast knowledge, and ample funds to surround herself with furniture, textiles, china, silver, and art. Eva and her second husband, Dr. Adalbert Fenyes, filled their home with art and antiques they assembled from their travels worldwide. Pasadena Patron offers an in-depth examination of the life and legacy of one of early Pasadena's most prominent and influential women. Themes covered in this special exhibition include Fenyes family history, Eva as an art patron and watercolorist, the influence of Europe and the East Coast on her collection, and the social milieu she created here in Pasadena. Exhibition highlights include items from the Fenyes collection never before on public display.

It draws on the themes of Sephardim, the Balkans, and memory, woven through Geraldine Brook's People of the Book, the 2012 winner of Pasadena's "One City, One Story." Just as the novel weaves the story of the Sarajevo Haggadah through different historical periods of conflict and persecution, we will explore different periods of Sephardic and Balkan Jewry, the role of cultural memory, and the complex fabric of multiethnic and interfaith relations. The talk will touch on the discovery and rescue of the Sarajevo Haggadah, both during World War II and during the Bosnian War, and the story of La Benevolencija, the nonsectarian aid agency where Jews and Muslims, Serbian Orthodox and Catholic Croats, all worked side by side to help save their embattled city. Tickets: PMH and Pasadena Jewish Temple and Center Members $15, Non-Members $20. Limited seating. Reservations suggested; please call 626.577.1660, ext. 10.
