The Rose Bowl - Illustrated Lecture and Booksigning with Author Michelle L. Turner Thursday, September 30, 7:30 pm
Join PMH staff member and author Michelle L. Turner as she discusses with illustration her new book, The Rose Bowl.
Best known for playing host to the "granddaddy of them all" - the much
anticipated major college football game held every January 1, the Rose
Bowl has further secured its place in sports history by playing host
to Super Bowls, BCS football championships, Olympic games, and World Cup
finals. For the residents of Pasadena, the Rose Bowl is also an
important community center. Many Pasadenans remember graduating at the
Bowl. Over the years, the Rose Bowl has held numerous concerts, peace
rallies, festivals, flea markets, and Fourth of July celebrations. And
the structure itself, designed by architect Myron Hunt, is seen by many
as a proud testament to Pasadena's commitment to architectural
innovation. The photographs in this book, many from the Museum Archives, highlight the Rose Bowl's memorable sports
moments as well as the stadium's unique role in Pasadena's cultural
life. Books will be available for purchase.
Tickets: Members Free; Non-Members $5. Reservations suggested; please call 626.577.1660, ext. 10. |

Pasadena Patron: The Life & Legacy of Eva Scott Fenyes Wed - Sun, Noon to 5:00 pm
In an era
when well-to-do families took a special interest in creating significant and
valuable collections, Pasadena's Eva Scott Fenyes devoted her
discriminating tastes, vast knowledge, and ample funds to surround herself with
furniture, textiles, china, silver, and art. The Fenyes Mansion
is filled with art and antiques assembled by Eva and her
second husband, Dr. Adalbert Fenyes, from their travels worldwide. Pasadena
Patron offers an in-depth examination of the
life and legacy of one of early Pasadena's
most prominent and influential women. Themes covered in this special exhibition include Fenyes
family history, Eva as an art patron and watercolorist, the influence of Europe and the East Coast on her collection, and the social milieu she created here in Pasadena. Exhibition highlights include items from the Fenyes collection never before on public display.

Vanishing Textiles of Amazonia Tuesday, September 28, 7:30 pm
The Textile Arts
Council invites you to join us for an evening with Pasadenan Adam
Mekler for a show-and-tell/discussion of textile and feather pieces
from his amazing collection of Amazonian material culture, which he
donated to the Houston Museum of Natural Science, where Mekler is
Associate Curator. Other than utilitarian pieces, most Amazonian
objects are gender specific, made for specific rituals, and discarded
after a single use. Each tribe, out of a total population of around
100,000, down from 3-5 million when the Amazon was discovered 500 years
ago, has its own set of unique ornaments.
Tickets:
Textile Arts Council Members $5; Museum Members $10; Non-Members $15. Reservations suggested; please call 626.577.1660, ext. 10.
Don't forget about our upcoming gala on September 25, when we'll honor Jim Watterson as our 2010 Contemporary History Maker! Visit our website for details.
