Pilates: Stott Pilates Reformer & Privates
We are so happy to share that we have added a Stott Pilates Reformer at Yoga Shack taught by certified Pilates instructor, Krista Dolbear. Krista and Lisa, both share a love of Pilates and became friends when Lisa approached Krista to help her gain the necessary strength to carry her wedding bouquet just months after her cervical spine fusion. The reformer is fabulous for injury rehabilitation, building core strength and lengthening and elongating muscles. Springs, leverage and body weight are used as resistance while performing movements targeting specific muscle groups. Movements consist of controlled, flowing movements working muscles through a full range of motion. Yoga Shack is proud to offer London's most affordable Stott Pilates Reformer sessions for $40 per session, or 6 for $215 including HST. Krista is demonstrating a few exercises on the reformer in these photos and shared the following bio: |
I have been certified in Fusion pilates from Pilateez.com in London and completed my certification in 2007. I am certified in both Reformer and Mat pilates and I have been teaching pilates since July of 2007. I have been Stott pilates trained and will be completing my certification by the end of 2011. When I was on Maturity leave with my 2nd son I decided to take my career in a different path. I wanted something that I enjoyed and was also flexible so I could spend time at home with both my boys. I have always enjoyed practicing pilates at home and have had great results with it both for toning and increasing my core strength. I always feel better and more energized after completing a workout.
When I am not teaching I am spending time with my 2 sons and my husband. We love to do family hikes close to home or up at the cottage in the summer or take the kids snowshoeing in the winter. My kids ask me often to show them some pilates exercises and they love to join in. I also have completed my diploma in natural nutrition from the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition and can provide nutritional counseling to clients.

Member Bio: Susan Borden
As a woman of a certain age, I probably should be sitting in a rocking chair, knitting booties, instead of practicing hot yoga and running between 30-40 kms per week. Prior to 13 months ago, I have always detested 'floor' exercises and avoided them at all costs. Don't get me wrong...I have a running habit and have spent my fair share of time using weight machines at the gym, but yoga was never on my to-do list.
More than a year ago, my sister-in-law asked me to take a hot class at the Yoga Shack with her, however, I declined. I had no intention of taking a yoga class, because I thought yoga was for sissies. Little did I know that I would eventually take a workshop from a visibly pregnant young missy who would kick my butt. Nor, could I imagine that I would participate in a 30 day challenge, all classes were hot with the last being the only exception, let alone find myself hanging on to each and every word Sadie Nardini would utter during her workshops.
When one of life's curveballs became a little too much for me, I picked up the phone and asked my sil if she still wanted me to join her for yoga. Had I known how much I would detest that first class, I wouldn't have agreed to go back to another - I never realized just how tough those first few classes would be. Eventually, my endurance improved and my core became stronger. Not only did I begin to look forward to those classes but I looked forward to many of those who practiced on the same nights (peeps such as, Larry, Cathy & Robin). The sense of community within the Yoga Shack is nothing short of awesome. Even for someone such as myself who is a true introvert, I feel a strong sense of belonging.
One of the many delightful surprises has been that my practice doesn't stay on my mat, within the walls of the Yoga Shack. It comes out with me and into my daily life. The curveball which lead to phoning my sil is still in existence, however, I'm able to deal with it more effectively. Also, my running has improved, significantly so, I'm achieving distances I never experienced in my early 20's. Each workshop teaches me more about myself and my outlook on life, proving that one is never too old to learn. Yeah, I sometimes think about red wine and poutine while lying in savasana, but I'm a work in progress...
If you think that hot yoga is for sissies or only the young'ins, think again. It may well be the hardest and the most meaningful workout you will ever experience.
Namaste. Susan Borden
