HOW TO TAKE BACK CONTROL OF OUR HEALTH

Many of us are coming to realize that no one will save us but us. The sooner we realize that and the sooner we start swimming against the tide the more hope we have of not getting sucked into falseness that we are getting fed on  many levels.

We need to continue learning about what makes our bodies and minds healthy and strong.

Hopefully we are buying and preparing more whole, nutritious foods and are breaking our addiction to junk/fast food.  Let us continue to move and sweat more; reconnecting with playing and resting.  These are some of the ways that we deal with the root causes of our health challenges rather than suppressing and medicating them.

I challenge you to rise up and treat your health with the priority it deserves. Take back the power for your own well-being; self care is not selfish! Discover how good it can feel.

3 Simple Shifts

Good food is not complicated. You can eat with minimal effort if you base your diet on simple, whole foods that contain a wide variety of nutrients and have appealing flavors and textures. Try these 3 strategies:

march nut

Eat beans and lentils;

they are nutritional gems! There are no 2 beans alike and each are packed with different essential fiber, vitamins, antioxidants, calcium, magnesium and a host of other minerals. Ounce per ounce they are the cheapest forms of protein and can help you achieve some very important health goals.

  1. They help prevent diabetes due to their fiber content which acts to slow absorption of sugars into the bloodstream.
  2. They promote proper digestion and reduce inflammation and toxicity by binding the bad stuff and flushing it out quickly.
  3. They help reduce weight gain by creating a full feeling, stabilize blood sugar and reduce food cravings.

Enjoy healthy fats:

Omega-3's. These  come from whole foods  like nuts, seeds, olive oils (olives), fish and avocado. There is such a 'fat phobia' in the US that many people are deficient in healthy fat!  The fact is the simple/empty carbohydrates cause most of obesity and heart disease; not healthy fats and most of the unhealthy fat comes from animal products. Here are some healthy benefits of Omega 3's:

  1. Control cravings because they 'satisfy' our appetite long term
  2. Reduce inflammation by equalizing the bad fats (like animal/vegetable oil, corn which are omega-6's)
  3. Build up your brain by helping the cells communicate better thus reducing problems like depression, mood swings and poor brain function.

Go Easy on the Grains:

American's grain consumption points to some troubling trends; the problem is that we're 'over-wheated'.

It's so easy to go overboard eating these items as they are packaged and marketed with such enticement. But an estimated 30- 40% of American have become gluten (wheat) intolerant! These so-called grain based foods are really "nutritionally nake

d" - everything from bagels and cereals to pasta.  Eat the whole grain >

barley, oats, buckwheat and quinoa to name a few. Only eat 1-2 servings/day and free up your stomach for more of the fruits & veggies which are also a great source of carbohydrates.

As a small business owner, I have carefully been building my practice

over the past 5 years. The next step in my growth was to be under my own roof and that goal became a reality as of March 1st 2010. Please feel free to see me in my new home. Most insurances are accepted (either under my name or under my Medical Director, Sharonelle Simmons MD). I continue to appreciate your referrals-it's the best compliment I can receive!

I look forward to seeing you!

Sincerely,
