BETTER PREVENTIVE CARE COVERAGE

On March 23, 2010, President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act. This law puts in place comprehensive health insurance reforms that will roll out over four years and beyond, with most changes taking place by 2014.

"Too many Americans don't get the preventive health care they need to stay healthy, avoid or delay the onset of disease, lead productive lives, and reduce health care costs. Cost-sharing (including copays, co-insurance and deductibles) reduces the likelihood that preventive services will be used.

Often because of cost, Americans use preventive services at about half the recommended rate.
Yet chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes - which are responsible for 7 of 10 deaths among Americans each year and account for 75% of the nation's health spending - often are preventable.

The Affordable Care Act will help make wellness and prevention services affordable and accessible to you by requiring health plans to cover preventive services and by eliminating cost-sharing.

According to a new regulation released by the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Treasury and the Department of Labor, if you or your family enroll in a new health plan on or after September 23, 2010, then that plan will be required to cover recommended preventive services without charging you a copay, co-insurance or deductible."

AUGUST/2010

Greetings!

This is the next installment of a series of discussions on "what exactly is your body trying to tell you"... I hope you enjoy and pass on to your friends/family.

Sleep:  highly over-rated or needed commodity? Many studies confirm it is impossible to go without it for any length of time!
It is essential for tissue and cell repair, detoxification and replenishing energy.

Newer studies confirm that chronic sleeplessness can lead to weight gain due to the lack of a hormone called leptin. This is the hormone that tells the brain when it has had enough to eat; too low levels are associated with carbohydrate cravings! Many other hormones are also replaced and balanced during our sleep;
  • Estrogen/Progesterone
  • Testosterone
  • Cortisol
  • Growth hormones
  • Thyroid
  • Melatonin
As you might suspect there are several reasons why we have difficult going to sleep, staying asleep or waking up often. Women seem to be plagued more often than men due to our 30+ years of hormonal changes however breathing interruptions (sleep apnea), restless leg syndrome and circadian rhythm disturbances (night shift work) are among other 'top' reasons.

Many of these hormones/issues can be confirmed through testing and  natural substances, prescriptions or behavioral modifications can be started to resolve them!

Please call the office for personal or medical issues. This is for your confidentiality.

Yours in health,
