Approximately 80% of heart disease is pre-determined by the particular set of genes we get from our parents. The other 20% is due to our lifestyle and dietary choices.
Chromosome #19 is where the genetic information lies-it's name is APO E (apolipoprotein E). It is a protein that is produced in the liver and brain and can lead to such diseases as high cholesterol/triglycerides or Alzheimer's. There is a DNA blood test available; the question is "do you want to know"?
Genetic testing is not for everyone! It will not definitely tell you if you will get a certain disease (as other factors play an important role too, like environment and lifestyle choices as previously stated) and it will not tell you that you are absolutely safe from others....but it will give great insight about what kinds of diet and medications will work best for you!
It's about prevention and precision. If I know you have the genetic set up for heart disease I will certainly lean toward being more aggressive in your treatment. I will be better able to customize an exact plan to meet your needs from the start.
It will most likely make a greater impact on you, if you find you have a genetic pre-disposition ,and perhaps entice you to work harder at preventing the gene from wreaking havoc in your health!
Please watch this short video from a Nurse Practitioner who wrote a book on the APO E GENE. I trained with her on this particular issue and continue to be mentored by her!
