Focus on Recruiting Teams, Not Workers
As part of the recruiting process, hiring managers tend to focus on aligning worker competencies to responsibilities of positions. This is not a bad thing - but perhaps your talent identification criteria should include aligning the organization with team members that are likely to adopt and live out the organization's mission, vision and values. Consider this, Beth Israel Hospital in Boston faced a $20M budget deficit - meaning nearly 10% of the hospitals 6,300 workers were to be laid off. Rather than conventional downsizing efforts, hospital CEO Paul Levy elected to open the books, share all the financials with staff and appeal for their help. Soon after hundreds of thousands of dollars poured in to the hospital - largely from the very hospital workers' whose jobs were in jeopardy. The potential downsizing list of 600 was reduced to just 70 workers. Clearly, this is a unique approach and speaks volumes to the kind of talent that Beth Israel identified, hired, and nurtured.
While there's no doubt that competencies are important in the selection process, based on Beth Israel's story, weighing heavily on the "people" component is just as important in building solid teams. As you identify and recruit your next hire, look for candidates that exhibit these characteristics:
-
A willingness to support and champion the organization's mission
-
An eagerness to uphold and exhibit the values of the organization
-
Someone that sees their position and contribution as part of a larger team, they're less interested in their own aggrandizement
-
They place greater emphasis on a career track - not on landing a job
-
An ability to process logical situations, and steers away from meaningless debate
Many of these characteristics can be discerned through a carefully structured behavioral interview. If you want more information on how to identify top talent, call Milton Hall or Matt Hoefling at (410) 480-3200 or visit us on the web at www.HumanCapitalLLC.com.
