LOGBOOK

Why do we do what we do? This seems like such a simple question. However when I pause to reflect I see how most often the question is answered with what we do and how we do it. Why? Those more concrete responses emerged entirely from the why are fall out more easily - but have we identified that why? Paddling grew out of a deep respect for the work of the people committed to making a difference. The sometimes quiet and sometimes noisy work of addressing inequalities in our communities that fuels leaders passion, fuels our passion. We have experienced the challenges, we have experienced the isolation, we have experienced the joy. We know that gathering together makes a difference in our leadership practice - and we invite you to join us. We hold leaders as deserving to be seen, supported, acknowledged, stretched, and challenged to impact their community in positive and transformative ways - to know when to stay - to know when to leave. Together we achieve more. Together we step up to the unlimited needs of our organizations and of our communities. We do this work because of our commitment to inspiring courageous leadership. |
RESUPPLY
How great leaders inspire action
Watch this 18 minute video
Simon Sinek has a simple but powerful model for inspirational leadership all starting with a golden circle and the question "Why?" His examples include Apple, Martin Luther King, and the Wright brothers -- and as a counterpoint Tivo, which (until a recent court victory that tripled its stock price) appeared to be struggling.
About Simon Sinek
In 2009, Simon Sinek released the book "Start With Why" -- a synopsis of the theory he has begun using to teach others how to become effective leaders and inspire change.

Reading the waters The nonprofit leaders we work with share one thing in common: they believe deeply in the work they are doing. Whether they are executive directors, board chairs, staff, or board members, they are motivated by what they do, by the people they work with, and by the vision of what they are striving to create.Satisfaction comes from this work and from knowing we are making a difference. When asked why a leader does the work she or he does, the response often falls out as a golden nugget. Ask a leader you know, "Why do you do what you do?" See what they say.
Here is how a number of leaders we know responded: Elaine Cale, Executive Director of Washington County Children's Program: "WCCP's services are vital to the children and families living in our community. The work that we do makes a huge difference in their lives and I want to be a part of helping to make a difference. Seeing a smile on a child's face (and it happens daily) when that child finds success with something that was such a challenge before, makes all our hard work worthwhile!" Mary Laury, Executive Director of Schoodic Arts for All: "None of us do this for any reason other than passion. I have a passion for bringing access to creative endeavors that contribute to quality of life in our community." Matt Murphy, General Manager of WERU Community Radio: "Community Radio is important because it provides diverse music and information, involves local people in actually creating radio programs, and serves audiences that are under-served by other local media. Leading such an organization is immensely worthwhile."
Doug Babkirk, Associative Director or University of Maine Cooperative Extension: "Why I do what I do...My work provides me the opportunity to teach, create, and learn. In my passion for working with individuals and groups, I believe in the power of people to develop life affirming relationships that contribute to a healthy, safe and loving planet for all beings."
Being able to articulate the WHY of what we do can be catalytic in engaging others, helping us stay focused, and ultimately, keeping our fires of inspiration burning to achieve our vision. Think about it - why do you do what you do? Ask those around you to do the same. Send us your responses and we will post them in our newsletter. |

Start With WHY by Simon Sinek
From Sinek's website:
Simon Sinek teaches leaders and organizations how to inspire people. He created a simple model (watch the TED talk, linked in Resupply) that he calls The Golden Circle, that codifies what makes the most inspiring people and organizations so successful and influential. The concept is so powerful that it is changing the way people think, act and communicate. More and more people are learning to become more effective, more efficient and more inspiring by discovering how to start everything they say and do with WHY.
With a little discipline, anyone can learn to inspire.
START WITH WHY offers an unconventional perspective that explains WHY some people and organizations are more innovative, more profitable, command greater loyalties from customers and employees alike and, most importantly, are able to repeat their success over and over. These are not the one hit wonders. These are the ones who change the course of industries or even society.
Because it's all based on how people think and act, this unique view of the world has application in big business and small business, in politics and non-profit. Though some people have a natural ability to start with WHY, this book offers compelling evidence that, with a little discipline, anyone can learn how to do it.
How does one idea do so much? Simple. It doesn't matter what you do, it matters WHY you do it.
The book was released fall of 2009. Watch a 9 minute video and download a chapter here.

How do the geese know when to fly to the sun? Who tells them the seasons?
How do we, humans, know when it is time to move on? As with the migrant birds,
so surely with us, there is a voice within, if only we would listen to it,
that tells us so certainly when to go forth into the unknown.
-- Elisabeth Kubler-Ross
