LOGBOOK

The shortest day of the year, December 21st is celebrated as the great turning toward light. It is a grand celebration in many cultures. It gives us the opportunity to pause and look back before looking forward. We want to thank and acknowledge all of you who have enriched our work through your courage, passion, push back, friendship, colleagueship, wisdom, and insight. Our work is informed and shaped by our relationships with you. As we take these experiences into the new year, we plan to continue to design innovative ways to support and inspire your courageous leadership.
Thank you. Ring in the new year!

Reading the waters
The work of
Parker Palmer consistently asks that we shed veneer and pretense and cultivate deeply
the wisdom we possess and can share in a way that benefits others. Anytime of year is a good time to ask,
"Am I doing my life's work?"
He invites us all to explore a path to wholeness, meaning, and relationship. He invites us to live an undivided
life, to "rejoin soul and role".
An undivided life allows us to align with what is authentic and to bring
down the wall that divides our values from what we are asked to do to succeed
in the world.
Now is a
good time to pause. Now is a good time to reflect on the divisions in our life.
Now is a good time to develop a practice that makes room for the emergence of
our knowing. Now is a good time to develop our circle of community. Now is a good time.
Parker Palmer reflects on the consequences of living
a divided life and the quest for wholeness. This podcast is one segment from a 5-CD set called An
Undivided Life: Seeking Wholeness in Ourselves, Our Work & Our World. Download or play podcast: The
Divided Life and the Quest for True SelfParker J.
Palmer, Ph.D., is an internationally recognized writer, speaker, and activist. He is founder and senior partner of the national Center for Courage & Renewal. Parker's work has given rise to "circles of trust"
around the world, where people in many walks of life are "rejoining soul
and role." He lives in Madison, WI.

G uidebook
You are invited to the Paddling the Rapids Book Group. Groups are open to anyone interested in the title we are discussing. Join your colleagues in a lively facilitated discuss about the book, Immunity to Change. Discussions take place in Portland and Bangor, February 2nd and 16th, from 4-6PM and by teleconference on February 11th and 24th, from 4-6PM. Do you have immunity to change? Try the brief self-inventory on Kegan and Kahey's website to find out. In Immunity to Change, authors Robert Kegan and Lisa Lahey show how our individual habits and mindsets, along with the collective norms and beliefs in our organizations-combine to create an overwhelming immunity to change. The authors go on to show us what we can do to overcome these forces. Sign up now for a book group discussion! Discussions are happening in Portland, Bangor, and through teleconference.

Navigation Tool
A strong brand image helps an organization communicate with current and potential clients and consumers. It is an important tool to help you to stand apart and be recognized. We are proud to share with you that Paddling's brand image just won an award!
Richard Reitz Smith entered the
Paddling the Rapids logo to Broderson in July 2009 to be considered in the Logos: Trade/B2B
category. The award ceremonies were October 21, 2009 at Merrill Auditorium. Paddling
the Rapids Logo was one of 4 award winners in Logos: Trade/B2B category.
The Broderson Awards were
created by the Maine Ad Club 30 years ago in memory of Dick Broderson, a
Portland radio and advertising professional and members of his family are
always in attendance. It is a biennial award to
showcase Maine's design
and advertising companies and professionals for outstanding creativity and
excellence. This year overall, there were over
400 entries across about 40 categories. The Maine Ad Club is one of the
nation's oldest professional organizations for advertising executives. The Ad
Club's mission is to promote professional development, create networking
opportunities and recognize creative excellence.
Each award level, either Gold,
Silver, or Bronze, is bestowed at the discretion of a panel of judges from
outside the state of Maine as to how well the entry meets the worthiness of
creativity and excellence. Entries are not competing against one
another but against the ideals of industry standards. There may not always
be a winner in each category level or sometimes there may be more than one per
category level.
Smith was thrilled and proud
for himself and for us, knowing the depth and the breadth of work that went
into the development of this identity for Paddling the Rapids. The development
process took place over a period of several months. There
were regular sessions of hard discussions about what "persona" this
legal entity would have. "Who" was this company going to be? Smith's
role as the designer was to translate the results of those focused conversations into
visuals. We trusted that the process would work and would create
something strong and concrete. Which it did did. The identity is deserving
of the award. You can contact Richard Reitz Smith at richardreitzsmith@gmail.com.Thank you Richard! And congratulations! |

"Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?'
'That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,' said the Cat.
`I don't much care where...' said Alice.
'Then it doesn't matter which way you go,' said the Cat."
Lewis Carrol from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
