LOGBOOK

Welcome to the newsletter from Deb Burwell & Carol Carriuolo of Paddling the Rapids LLC.
I must say that I resisted the notion of coaching as having value when I first learned about it. It seemed as if coaches were popping up everywhere. Even Homer Simpson had a coach! It took a life-changing experience with Coaches Training Institute to set my mindset upside down. Now after completing a rigorous training and credentialing program, as well as, having a coach of my own, I believe the value is understated. We hope you consider coaching as tool for your personal and professional growth. Our newsletters will support your courageous leadership by keeping you informed of:
- valuable resources we are discovering,
- relevant groups, workshops, and webinars we are initiating,
- people making change,
- useful tips and tools from the field,
- and other events worth knowing about,
We welcome your feedback and encourage you to let us know what you would like to see in these regular communications.

RESUPPLY
Do you have 5 minutes? Watch Stand By Me . You have probably seen this video (but if not, I recommend that you indulge your heart by doing so). From the award-winning documentary, "Playing For Change: Peace Through Music", comes the one of many "songs around the world" being released independently.Playing for Change is a multimedia movement created to inspire, connect, and bring peace to the world through music. The idea for this project arose from a common belief that music has the power to break down boundaries and overcome distances between people. No matter whether people come from different geographic, political, economic, spiritual or ideological backgrounds, music has the universal power to transcend and unite us as one human race. And with this truth firmly fixed in our minds, we set out to share it with the world. Listen to all ten episodes. Be inspired!

Reading the waters
What is coaching? According to ICF (The International Coach Federation, the largest worldwide resource for professional coaches, and credentialing coaches), coaching is partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.A survey conducted by the International Coach Federation (ICF) reported that coaching clients attained a higher level of self-awareness and self-confidence, a more balanced life, smarter goal-setting and lower stress levels. In the same report, coaching clients said their investment in a coach was well worth the money. Another study suggested that coaching can significantly enhance your mental discipline, translating into profound positive behavioral changes. CompassPoint embarked on a 12-month demonstration project of Executive Coaching with nonprofit Executive Directors. They studied executive directors who worked one-on-one with executive coaches who helped them navigate both personal life issues and organizational leadership matters. Executive Directors agreed that their coaching experience met and often exceeded their expectations. Overall, EDs reported a statistically significant increase in their effectiveness at balancing the demands of their personal and professional lives. Is coaching right for you? Most coaches offer a free initial session. This is a good way to explore whether coaching and the coach are a match for you. It is important that the fit be right be right for you, that it is someone you can easily relate to, and that it has the potential for creating a powerful partnership. There are many credentialed and experienced coaches. Contact us for ways to find coaches. Contact Carol (she is a Certified Professional Co-Active Coach) for a free session. |

"Oftentimes it is very hard to ask for help or honest personal feedback. It requires that we be vulnerable. As leaders we do not often have the safe space in which to admit faults and vulnerabilities because we need to seem invincible. This forum allowed me the privacy and security to examine delicate matters in a confidential setting. Carol and Deb were very transparent and non-judgmental - so, as the months unfolded we got deeper into topics. It was also very fun!" executive director participant |
Navigation Tool
This wheel tool provides perspective on your life and helps you identify where you want to focus. It can be customized to use in many situations and with a variety of audiences. Try it. A blank wheel is attached for your convenience.
This wheel contains eight sections that, together, represent the big picture of your life. The headings of the sections on the wheel is up to you. You decide where to put the focus. The exercise is designed to take a measure of your level of satisfaction in the designated areas on the day you work through this exercise. It is not a picture of how it has been in the past or what you want it to be in the future. It is a snapshot taken in the moment. It is not a report card on how well you have performed or what you have achieved. The emphasis is on your level of satisfaction in each area. Design the wheel to have relevance to you.
Headings to consider: Health, Friends, Family, Personal growth, Significant other, Romance, Money, Career, Physical environment, Fun, Recreation, Activity, Creativity, Spirituality, Personal development, Community engagement, Travel, Learning, Physical activity, Music.
Alternatively, the wheel could have a specific focus. If it related to work the headings might be: Leadership, Decision-making, Team development, Risk-taking, Communication, Strategic planning, Service, Results, Change leadership, Conflict resolution, Spirit, Compensation, Benefits.
Taking the center of the wheel as 0 and the outer edge as an ideal 10, rank your level of satisfaction with each area by drawing a straight or curved line to create a new outer edge. This creates a new perimeter for the wheel. Looking at your level of satisfaction in all areas, ask yourself, "How bumpy would the ride be if this were a real wheel?"
Look at areas where you want to improve your level of satisfaction and think about what you might do to accomplish that. Identify one or two scores that you want to affect immediately. What does greater satisfaction look like? What actions will you take? When will you take these actions? How will you be accountable to yourself? What support will help ensure that the actions occur?

Guidebook
In ONE: The Art and Practice of Conscious Leadership, Lance Secretan reframes leadership theory with a new vision for the 21st century-a vision of reconnecting each of us with our deepest human needs. He traces 6,000 years of history to show how we have become detached from our innate sense of oneness, and instead, have embraced the illusion of separateness, rooted in science and rational thought. Secretan reveals how this illusion has created profound misunderstandings about leadership and how we can, once again, become conscious leaders through the practice of oneness. The conscious leader practices the CASTLE Principles. CASTLE is an acronym for six attributes: Courage, Authenticity, Service, Truthfulness, Love, and Effectiveness. Like all fundamental, life-changing concepts, these are simple ideas-well known to us all, yet easier to talk about than to live. Secretan shows us how to embrace these principles, helping us to see the sacred connections between everyone and everything, which are the source of conscious leadership. ONE combines many practical exercises and reflections to help refresh our ideas about leadership and life with stories of remarkable people and organizations from around the world that are living this new thinking.
