Greetings!

St. Thomas the Apostle is an Episcopal Parish in the Anglo-Catholic tradition.  We are called by God to be a holy place where love is found, where all are named and where hearts are freed to change the world.

St. Thomas has a great respect for both the rich liturgical heritage of the church and for living the message of social justice proclaimed by Jesus Christ. Whether you are young or old, gay or straight, single, married or in a relationship, female or male, poor or wealthy, you are welcome at St. Thomas just as you are...a child of God and an inheritor of God's grace.

A Message from
the Rector's Warden

On behalf of the Fr. Davies, I would like to thank all the members of the parish, the Vestry, Deacon Johnson, and even an ally from the neighborhood, who attended the City Council meeting on Wednesday. Many filled out speaker cards and were prepared to speak on our behalf, but this proved unnecessary, as our sheer numbers (there were twenty of us) carried the day.

Special thanks goes to Julie Heimark who volunteered her legal expertise, and who worked tirelessly, showing both great diplomacy and real toughness. This, combined with her thorough grasp of all the necessary legal issues, made her a powerful and effective advocate. We could not have done it without her.

What a rewarding occasion for all of us, to be there and to experience what can be accomplished when we all pull together. Many people spent many hours to get us to this successful resolution of the parking issue. We thank them all.

2-Hour Parking on Sundays!

The City Council has confirmed our earlier success before the Transportation Committee and voted to adopt the resolution as it was reported out of the Transportation Committee; thus, the new parking restrictions on Gardner Street are as follows:

No Parking Anytime Except

Sunday through Friday

2-Hour Parking

8am to 7pm

The new signage will not be posted for at least 90 days; however, the City has assured us that parking enforcement will not ticket those cars parked on Gardner Street on Sunday (for two hours or less) during the 8am to 7pm time period.

Unfortunately, this does not address the Saturday parking problem. We continue to work vigorously toward a long-term solution to address all of our parking needs.

LASchola Sings Palestrina at Latin Vigil Mass This Weekend!

On Saturday, 25 August at 5pm, the LASchola will perform Missa Assumpta est Maria, and Assumpta est Maria by Italian Renaissance composer Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (1525-1594).

Following the Mass, all are invited to a coffee, tea, and light snack reception in the Large Parish Hall. This will be a wonderful opportunity to meet with the Clergy, Parishioners, as well as the LASchola singers!

New Catechism Class Forming

On Saturday, 8 Sept. the new Catechism Class will begin.  The class is the cornerstone of our Stewardship of Faith and Knowledge program. Anybody interested in being Baptized, Confirmed, Received into the Episcopal Church or Parishioners wishing to renew their vows, please contact the Parish Office to schedule an appointment. The course commitment is a weekly class each Saturday morning starting with a 10am Mass; the process leads up to a retreat and culminates at the Great Vigil of Easter with the Bishop. Graduates have a deeper understanding of themselves, their relationship with God and with the Parish community. Space is limited.

On This Day in
Christian History

On this day in 410, the Eternal City, Rome, was sacked by the Visigoths, led by Alaric I. This was the first time in almost 800 years that Rome had fallen to an enemy. St. Jerome, living in Bethlehem at the time, wrote that "The City which had taken the whole world was itself taken." Pagans blamed pacifist Christians and their God for the defeat. St. Augustine, in his massive City of God, repudiated this claim and blamed Rome's corruption instead.
