Greetings!

St. Thomas the Apostle is an Episcopal Parish in the Anglo-Catholic tradition.  We are called by God to be a holy place where love is found, where all are named and where hearts are freed to change the world.

St. Thomas has a great respect for both the rich liturgical heritage of the church and for living the message of social justice proclaimed by Jesus Christ. Whether you are young or old, gay or straight, single, married or in a relationship, female or male, poor or wealthy, you are welcome at St. Thomas just as you are...a child of God and an inheritor of God's grace.

Parking Update

Wednesday, 8 August at 2pm is the date and time of the public hearing before the City Council's Transportation Committee on the renewal of the parking restrictions. The hearing is scheduled in Room 1010 at City Hall (200 North Spring Street). Our petition opposing the restrictions was sent to the City on July 23. Thank you to all 120 people who signed the petition. The most recent letter mailed to Mr. LaBonge will be available at the back of the church on Sunday. We also continue to investigate alternative solutions such as Visitor Passes and parking at Gardner Street school. As always, thank you for your patience.

Blessed Brat Feast!

On Sunday, 12 August, the Parish Cell of Our Lady of Walsingham will be hosting "The Blessed Brat Feast Day" immediately following the High Mass. They'll be serving brats with all the fixin's!

"Ninth Sunday After Trinity"
by John Keble

After the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice

(I Kings 19:12)

Towards promised regions of serener grace;
On Horeb, with Elijah, let us lie,
Where all around on mountain, sand, and sky,
God's chariot wheels have left distinctest trace;

There, if in jealousy and strong disdain
We to the sinner's God of sin complain,
Untimely seeking here the peace of Heaven -
"It is enough. O Lord! now let me die
E'en as my fathers did: for what am I
That I should stand where they have vainly striven?" -

Perhaps our God may of our conscience ask,
"What doest thou here frail wanderer from thy task?
Where hast thou left those few sheep in the wild?"
Then should we plead our heart's consuming pain,
At sight of ruined altars, prophets slain,
And God's own ark with blood of souls defiled;

He on the rock may bid us stand, and see
The outskirts of His march of mystery,
His endless warfare with man's wilful heart;
First, His great Power He to the sinner shows
Lo! at His angry blast the rocks unclose,
And to their base the trembling mountains part

Yet the Lord is not here: 'Tis not by Power
He will be known--but darker tempests lower;
Still, sullen heavings vex the labouring ground:
Perhaps His Presence thro' all depth and height,
Best of all gems that deck His crown of light,
The haughty eye may dazzle and confound.

God is not in the earthquake; but behold
From Sinai's caves are bursting, as of old,
The flames of His consuming jealous ire.
Woe to the sinner should stern Justice prove
His chosen attribute;--but He in love
Hastes to proclaim, "God is not in the fire."

The storm is o'er--and hark! a still small voice
Steals on the ear, to say, Jehovah's choice
Is ever with the soft, meek, tender soul;
By soft, meek, tender ways He loves to draw
The sinner, startled by His ways of awe:
Here is our Lord, and not where thunders roll.

Back, then, complainer; loath thy life no more,
Nor deem thyself upon a desert shore,
Because the rocks the nearer prospect close.
Yet in fallen Israel are there hearts and eyes
That day by day in prayer like thine arise;
Thou know'st them not, but their Creator knows.

Go, to the world return, nor fear to cast
Thy bread upon the waters, sure at last
In joy to find it after many days.
The work be thine, the fruit thy children's part:
Choose to believe, not see: sight tempts the heart
From sober walking in true Gospel ways.

New Catechism Class Forming

On Saturday, 8 Sept. the new Catechism Class will begin.  The class is the cornerstone of our Stewardship of Faith and Knowledge program. Anybody interested in being Baptized, Confirmed, Received into the Episcopal Church or Parishioners wishing to renew their vows, please contact the Parish Office to schedule an appointment. The course commitment is a weekly class each Saturday morning starting with a 10am Mass; the process leads up to a retreat and culminates at the Great Vigil of Easter with the Bishop. Graduates have a deeper understanding of themselves, their relationship with God and with the Parish community. Space is limited.

Need Help Getting to Mass? Willing to Help Others?

The Parish is organizing carpooling services! If you need a ride or are willing to drive, please enter your name on the correct sheet on the bulletin board of the Large Parish Hall.

Other options include Metro (323) 466-3876 and Dial-A-Ride (800) 827-0829, which provides curb-to-curb, on-demand transportation (mostly for the elderly and disabled; somewhat for the general public).

On This Day
in Christian History

On this day in 1492, Christopher Columbus set sail from Spain for the "Indies". Though the explorer was in part driven by a quest for gold and glory, he also saw himself as a missionary. He thought, if there were a shortcut to the Eat by sea, missionaries could be sent there faster, thus enabling Christians to meet the provision for world evangelization before the Lord could return.
