Greetings!

St. Thomas the Apostle is an Episcopal Parish in the Anglo-Catholic tradition.  We are called by God to be a holy place where love is found, where all are named and where hearts are freed to change the world.

St. Thomas has a great respect for both the rich liturgical heritage of the church and for living the message of social justice proclaimed by Jesus Christ. Whether you are young or old, gay or straight, single, married or in a relationship, female or male, poor or wealthy, you are welcome at St. Thomas just as you are...a child of God and an inheritor of God's grace.

LASchola to Accompany Latin Vigil Mass This Weekend

LA ScholaThis Saturday, 23 June, at 5pm the LASchola returns to the Parish of St. Thomas the Apostle to sing Mass for Four Voices by English composer William Byrd (1540-1623), the Salve Regina by English priest and composer Peter Philips (1562-1628) and an anthem by Italian Renaissance composer Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (1525-1594).

Following the Mass, a reception with coffee, tea, and light snacks will be offered in the Parish Hall. This will be a wonderful opportunity to meet with the Clergy, Parishioners, as well as with the LASchola singers.

The LASchola is a small local singing ensemble that performs early music of the Church in the context for which it was written - the Mass. On the fourth Saturday of each month, the LASchola accompanies the Latin Vigil Mass.

An Update from Seminarian Shireen Baker

Dear Parish of St. Thomas,

Shireen BakerI hope you are all doing well back in Los Angeles.  Things have been increasingly busy for me over here in Virginia.  I finished the last Semester of my Middle year of Seminary only to be immediately thrown into my summer Clinical Pastoral Education program.  I have been working as a hospital chaplain for a few weeks now and I must say the experience is pretty enlightening.  Hospital chaplaincy has taught me a lot about myself, I am getting quite a clear picture of both my strengths as well as my areas of growth when it comes to pastoral care.  CPE is turning out to be very educational and the experience will be a great help in my future ministry.

Next year will be increasingly busy for me.  My course load will be quite extensive and there are several student government responsibilities that I have taken on, this is all in addition to working as one of the schools sacristans and acting as the teaching assistant to the liturgics professors.  Please pray for me as I enter this exciting and yet rather busy time of year.

In some ways it feels as though time at seminary is flying by - I sometimes feel like I can hardly catch my breath - and yet at the same time I feel as though I have been away from home for way too long.  I very much miss St. Thomas and all that it has to offer.  I particularly miss worshiping with all of you.  The combination of liturgy and fellowship that St. Thomas offers cannot be found anywhere else in the world.  So thank you for your support and I look forward to seeing you all soon.

Your servant in Christ,

Shireen Baker

St. Alban, Proto Martyr of Britain, c. 250

St. Alban was the first British Christian martyr. According to St. Bede, St. Alban was a pagan who converted to Christianity, and was executed by decapitation. St. Albans Abbey was later founded near the site of his death. The date of his death has never been firmly established.

In 2006 some Church of England clergy suggested that St. Alban replace St. George as the patron saint of England. There have also been claims that he should be patron saint of Britain as a whole.

We commemorate St. Alban this day with a Low Mass at 7pm.
