Greetings!

St. Thomas the Apostle is an Episcopal Parish in the Anglo-Catholic tradition.  We are called by God to be a holy place where love is found, where all are named and where hearts are freed to change the world.

St. Thomas has a great respect for both the rich liturgical heritage of the church and for living the message of social justice proclaimed by Jesus Christ. Whether you are young or old, gay or straight, single, married or in a relationship, female or male, poor or wealthy, you are welcome at St. Thomas just as you are...a child of God and an inheritor of God's grace.

Bishop Christopher Senyonjo, Human Rights Advocate, to Preach at St. Thomas the Apostle this Sunday

In conjunction with the LA Film Fest's US premiere of Call Me Kuchu, the documentary that exposes the horrors of Uganda's homophobic government, Bishop Christopher Senyonjo is traveling to the US to address worldwide homophobia and the anti-gay movement and legislation pending in Uganda.

Bishop Senyonjo, the outspoken advocate for human rights, often referred to as the Desmond Tutu of Uganda, has taken great risks in defense of LGBT people in his country, a nation where lawmakers recently considered imposing a death penalty on homosexuals. Bp. Senyonjo served as a bishop in the Anglican Church of Uganda from 1974 to 1998. As he was retiring, Uganda's President Museveni called for greater criminalization against homosexuality. At the same time, Bp. Senyonjo agreed to counsel some young gay men. One by one, he discovered that they were frightened and unhappy, felt rejected, and wondered whether God loved them since they were being called sinners by their teachers and peers. He realized during those sessions that they did not choose to be gay, that they were born that way. He helped them find ways to accept themselves and urged them to keep their faith because God loves them. These men started a support and advocacy group - Integrity Uganda. Bp. Senyonjo agreed to be their chaplain and chair, not knowing how risky it was going to be. He was vehemently attacked personally for his support for the group. He received death threats, which prompted him to flee to the US for sanctuary. Integrity USA supports Bp. Senyonjo and provides an office where he can counsel and pastor to the LGBT community.

Bishop Senyonjo will be preaching at the 8am and 10:30am Masses this Sunday.

Evelyn Underhill, Spiritual Writer, 1941

Evelyn Underhill was an English Anglo-Catholic writer and pacifist known for numerous works on religion and spiritual practice, in particular works on Christian mysticism.

In the English-speaking world, she was one of the most widely read writers on such matters in the firat half of the twentieth century. No other book of its type--until the appearance in 1946 of Aldous Huxley's The Perennial Philosophy--met with success to match that of her best-known work, Mysticism, published in 1911.

We commemorate Blessed Evelyn Underhill this day with a Low Mass at 7pm.
