Greetings!
St. Thomas the Apostle is an Episcopal Parish in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. We are called by God to be a holy place where love is found, where all are named and where hearts are freed to change the world.
St. Thomas has a great respect for both the rich liturgical heritage of the church and for living the message of social justice proclaimed by Jesus Christ. Whether you are young or old, gay or straight, single, married or in a relationship, female or male, poor or wealthy, you are welcome at St. Thomas just as you are...a child of God and an inheritor of God's grace. |

Parking Update
We continue to work hard on removing the weekend parking restrictions that the City recently imposed. We have had much dialogue with the City and have also requested Diocesan support. Although we were successful in getting temporary relief for Palm Sunday and Easter Day, the City declined to provide interim relief between now and August. The restrictions are set to expire on 17 August unless they are renewed. We anticipate that the area residents will request a renewal. We are working through the political process to oppose any renewal. Currently, we do not know when the hearing on the renewal will occur. We will distribute that information as soon as we receive it. We are also working on a petition for all 91 parishioners who reside in Mr. LaBonge's district. If you receive a copy of the petition in your email inbox, that means that you live in Mr. LaBonge's district based on your address in the Church's directory.

The Venerable Bede, Monk at Jarrow, Scholar, Historian, 735
 | "The Venerable Bede Translates John" by J.D. Penrose (ca 1902) |
St. Bede was an English monk in modern Jarrow. He is well known as an author and scholar, and his most famous work, Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum (The Ecclesiastical History of the English People) gained him the title "The Father of English History." In 1899, St. Bede was made a Doctor of the Church by Pope Leo XIII, a position of theological significance; he is the only native of Great Britain to achieve this designation. St. Bede was moreover a skilled linguist and translator, and his work with the Latin and Greek writings of the early Church Fathers contributed significantly to English Christianity, making the writings much more accessible to his fellow Anglo-Saxons.
At the time St. Bede wrote Historica ecclesiastica, there were two common ways of referring to dates. One was to use indictions, which were 15-year cycles, counting from 312 AD. The other approach was to use regnal years - the reigning Roman emperor, for example, or the ruler of whichever kingdom was under discussion. This meant that in discussing conflicts between kingdoms, the date would have to be given in the regnal years of all the kings involved. Although St. Bede used both of these approaches on occasion, he adopted a third method as his main approach to dating: the anno domini method invented by Dionysius Exiguus. Even though St. Bede did not invent this method, his adoption of it is the main reason why it is now so widely used.
At St. Thomas, we celebrate the life and works of St. Bede with a Mass tonight at 7pm.

On This Day in Church History
On this day in 1535 after holding Munster under siege for over a year, the army of the city's Roman Catholic bishop breaks in, capturing and killing the radical Anabaptists who had taken control. The Anabaptists had acted on the prophecy of Melchoir Hoffman (later modified by Jan Matthys) that Christ would soon return, and only Christians in Munster would survive. During the siege, Matthys and his followers became increasingly despotic and maniacal, enjoying excesses while the people starved and introducing wild innovations such as polygamy.
